Great read. Wes, you had us worried with the weather that was headin your way. One of the best parts about this situation was how the cf.com family rallied. My phone lit up when people recieved the notification. I contacted Sea Tow G’town and Chas to confirm they had a vessel responding. I also had cf.com folks sayin they were “ready to go”! Its great that we get to learn/discuss things, and poke fun at each other; its even better that you know we’re all watchin’ out to. Kudos to ALL involved. BTW get a SPOT!

I just figured out why the battery went dead.

I heard Wes just spent about $4000 on a new hip hop gangsta rap stereo for the bote. But they forgot to tell him he was gonna need a heavy duty alternator to keep the tunes and rhymes pumping outta da 14" super sub pushing 2000 amps. Wes catches more fish that way because the fish just cant take the tunes anymore and they give up!!

Just kidding Wes, but I had to have a little fun on this one!!

The thing I will be doing from now on when running the boat is never putting the perko switch on “ALL.” I will put on one batt or the other so that if the motor isn’t charging the batts, having the switch on all won’t discharge both batts as my accessories are running.

It’s that new secret 10 jillion gigawatt transducer he put on his boat that really should be running off 480v 3phase! Now he can tell if the fish are smiling or not before he catches them!

I have a solution to remembering to fiddle with the batt switch. pm sent. call me.

do you turn your motor off while fishing? You can alway run out on both batteries, turn off the motor and switch over to 1. Or get a pro mariner charger and always have a charge going to the motor that needs it.

Teamwork. Nice job all the way around and great read. I added battery number 2 after Mike jumped me off one night. Hope the fix is easy.

That is what I have always done. This is why I got stranded.

I have always run the motor with batts on ALL- when cutting off I switch to 1 or 2 isolated to save the other batt for cranking.

The problem is when your charging system (on the motor) goes bad, then when you run your switch on ALL, you are discharging both batts. If one of your batt’s are bad, then when you put the switch on ALL, you are killing your good batt faster because it’s power is being burnt trying to pull the bad batt back up.

I have a few pumps on my bote, and the transducer really does use a fair bit of power when in deep water. Plus, I did have the switch on ALL for all that time I had the motor running. So everything on the boat was discharging the batts all day long - both batts - instead of just one like if I’d cranked on a batt that morning and then switched to the other batt immediately to keep what I knew was a good batt isolated as reserve.

You should crank on #1, and if it turns over fast, switch immediately to @2 for the entire day. If 2 goes bad, you know #1 is perfectly fine when you need to go to it. Switch the batts you use in those roles each trip…

This would have prevented me from being stranded Sunday!

Chris V was the first to tell me this after he learned about what happened. Others have also since then.

On running the single engine while offshore-

I do not cut my motor off when offshore except for maybe 10-15 min periods at the time. When seas are rough I never cut the motor off even while on anchor.
