To fish with a leader or not....

Anyone have any links or pics of the knots that y’all use to tie on the leaders

Other than not knowing how to tie the right knots, I don’t see why anyone would choose not to use a flouro leader. Flouro is more abrasion resistant and less visible, so it can only help. Sure you can catch fish tying directly to braid, but if anything, you’re diminishing your chances at success.

Fishing in Louisiana this past fall (where redfish will eat anything that moves), I actually lost several big fish when I skipped the leader and tied directly to the 20 lb braid. Fish chafed right through the braid. Didn’t lose a single one using 20 lb flouro leader though. I use only 10-20 lb braid, so leader is a must for abrasion resistance in my mind.

I’ve also seen flouro leader clearly outfish mono, and I’ve seen a situation where scaling down to 8 lb flouro was the only way to get a bite. 95% of the time it probably makes no difference, but using flouro leader definitely doesn’t hurt your chances.

knots are literally the weak link in a fishing system. why would you want to add another by tying on a leader?

Here is a link to the yucatan knot. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/yucatan-knot/

Good strong, small knot. I use a quad surgeons knot to double the smaller braid.

i use a leader for a couple reasons, the main one being, simply i like it better to tie knots. my braid knots almost will always slip on a big fish when the line has been sittin in the water for awile. i also think that water clarity has somethin to do with it, but who really has talked to a fish and found out for sure? if you have, id sure love to hear what they have to say
