To Tie or Buy...

Only thing better is a fish on a rod you built with a fly you tied…

Looking to scale down my tying area and need to get rid of a bigger(lighted) desk in exchange for smaller table/desk. PM if any one is interested - it’s free!

i started fly fishing because i first got into tyng(green bass float n fly) and really liked it. i still tie at least as much as i fish. one good way to get going is to buy out someone who thought they would like it and found the time and space were not possible or their eyes got bad etc. some of the stuff wont be appropriate for SW but it is good to practice on cheap freshwater hooks with common materials. tube flies are also a way to practice on hooks that arent 20-50 cents apiece. squirrel death month(matin stupid) is coming soon and i take some scenic routes in April and May. ive seen clusters of 4 or 5 but some are stale(flat). you can also usually get deer tails and turkey feathers from friends. after a while you want high quality new materials(flash, reusable hooks, etc) for ease of use but just to see if you like it i vote for inexpensive. i love it–not everyone does. the thrill of catching a red is greatly amplified on something you tied and especially thought up.

he’s pretty white for a fly guy

TyOneOn- Thats incredibly impressive that you did all that with vice grips, I’ll definately be trying that trick.

Snook- Thanks, Ill definately check out one of those classes.

Thanks again guys for all the input and information.

snook I tied on 22, just wrapped some hackle from a whiting grizzly cape, with a bead head and the panfish love it … its fun to hook up with one of those guys on my 3 wt

To tie a fly and then to catch a fish with the fly you tied is very satisfying…!

yeah i dont think theres any way it saves money(unless you plan to fish one pattern for the next 10 years) but the satisfaction is amped when you catch one on your own fly. it does require a place to set up and some time to learn. i like it cause it is projects that i can finish in 10 minutes or so and i like playing with the materials and trying to get an action in the water that i imagined from a combination of materials and techniques. i almost consider tying a seperate “sport”.

But, we know what you mean. I’m not going to call making things with pretty threads and yarn a sport but, you can be competitive if you want. Just don’t expect to have an athlete’s body by sitting in a chair.

yeah its a stretch. but if curling and baseball count… just wanted to convey that each activity can be pursued independently and the only real need to tie is get the satisfaction of using all of your creativity and skill to fool something with a brain the size of a pea. i would probably need to lose about 1 or 2 million flies before i start to break even and i got most of my stuff used. hope to get some inspiration from Lefty today so i can fill some more boxes with shiny things. hope to trash a lot more of them this summer if i can get this Red thing down and my knee cooperates. Pilates to keep my wrists in shape.
