</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>No, that can’t be true. Look at this gurgler. It looks exactly like a um… well like a mud m… um a um…OK. It looks like couch stuffing! Is it OK to spray it with “Bass Attractant” Am I still fly fishing?
Obviously, they seem kind of silly to me. Like Newman says, throw whatever you’ve got. It’s your fishing experience. I won’t make fun anymore.
yeah i agree with Newman, i don’t think they pay too much attention to pattern, either they’re gonna eat on top or not. We found some singles pushing hard on friday morning and they wouldn’t touch a zara spook or a gurgler, but they were slamming subsurface mullet patterns. I like that M.V.P. popper for real shallow, real calm conditions, but lately when they’ve been chasing finger mullet i’ve been using real big dahlberg divers. If they won’t come up and grab it off the top, you can strip it and make it dive into the strike zone.
Newman, do you think the Hell’s Bay Hopper has a low hookup rate due to fishing for reds with their downward positioned mouth or because the fly rides hook point up? I’ve caught a few largemouths on some of mine and haven’t noticed the low hookup. Only fished them a few times though, usually I’m tying on a Gurgler

Here’s my version of the Gurgler those guys in the N’awlins video were using to hammer those reds. Thinking about it, since the rabbit hair soaks up water and gets heavy it will pull the ass end of the fly down and ride lower in the water like some of you all were discussing. I’m not sure how long that bottom lip would last. The foam can tear easily. I don’t really think the fish mind though. Since I spent 5 minutes tying this fly I guess I’ve got to plan a trip down there soon!

Hokie, that popgurgler looks perfect!!
never fished for bass with hb hoppers.
Saw lotsa reds come unglued when using them, and ditched 'em. Reds have much harder mouths than bass, and i prefer a fly with a fully exposed hook point and bend. Could have been the way i tied them on short shank gama’s…
Maybe with a 3x long shank hook the point would be far enough away from foam for it to bite better??? Just went back to what has worked better for me.
Would be forced to figure out how to make them work if I fished an area (like most of fl.), that had floating grass to contend with.
Figure it out and let me know. I like the simplicity and action of pattern and would like to be able to utilize when reds are chewin scrimps.
