Topwater for Reds

Thanks for the info guys! One other question though. Are you throwing mono or braid? Ive used both for bass on topwater just nor sure which to take with me for reds.

Braid always, but…

I always use a fluoro leader with plugs because it reduces the amount of fouling in the hooks. You know how braid tends to wrap around the hooks and get in your split rings, especially if you don’t lay the plug out flat on your cast. I picked that tip up at a seminar somewhere and it really works.

And they will hit top water until when? The water gets colder or even then also?

Probably doesn’t make a huge difference but I like using mono leaders specifically for TW. Fluoro sinks and can cause the plug to nose dive underwater especially with the Spooks since they seem to be more weight sensitive. Longer leaders will make it worse. I don’t think in the low light situations they care too much about mono vs fluoro plus you have giant hardware hanging off the lure with the hooks so the leader is probably the last thing that’s going to spook them.

Got another big red on a skitter this am. 31.5". Almost spooled me
