just come over on James Island to my creek and you wont have to worry about catching anything because some jerk off will empty your trap, unhook it from the rope and toss it in two pieces just out of reach in the bottom of the pluff mud…beside the other one he did the exact same way!!! But yet there is a nice new trap hanging there still intact (which I assume was his).
I hope the a hole is reading this too…
But i used little soft doggy treats and or bread and it works great.
Try using bacon - the grease in the water draws them

Thanks for all the info guys. I’m on the north end of the grand strand (Little River/Cherry Grove) and I think the bait sellers seem to be picked pretty clean by the time they get up here. I’ve picked up a few tips here. Will be looking for little creeks that I can access from the road.

Farmdawg put up a game catcher camera and let the law deal with him or you could handle it old school (the fun way). I’ve seen boats some guides too, rob crabbers traps (dirty) including my personal pots. I even had a guy brag to me how he robbed traps in acapulo creek to go cobia fishing which were mine, he received a verbal castration. I’ve even found a bottle with a ten in it put in my trap when a thief with some morals robbed mine. But I’ve only seen them caught by the crabber once and watching four grown men cower to one beast of a crabber was awesome and it got funnier when I saw them open up there wallets.

WHERE you put it is 100x more important than what bait you use.
Find a good muddy creek and look for a spot deep enough to cover the trap at low tide.
I like marsh creeks and fish them around the low. Doing that the trap will have hundreds within the hour.
Bait? I don’t care…I use whatever I have. Mud minnows aren’t picky.
ive found that oily cat food can cracked open works best. if im on boat i put in a tidal pool that doesnt dry out at low tide. the minnows get trapped and just go crazy on the trap. if im on land, i put it where the water is just touching the top of the trap, and move it every 30 minutes to deeper water

I caught a grand total of 1 mud minnow today from dead low to 3hrs rising tide in the creek I choose. Guess I got the wrong creek.
