Can his tape be purchased around MI/Gtown? Also I am almost embarrassed to ask this, but what is the difference between power steering fluid and hydraulic fluid? I have used the can that you attach to the hole near the helm before. That is a gas, not a fluid.
It looks like SeaTow did just exactly what they were supposed to do. They were on standby and were monitoring the situation in case they needed to assist.
Fortunate Son, Did you locate the leak? Was it something that you could have patched up enough to get home?
Fortunate Son handled their problem and let the coast guard know their plight.
Coast Guard responded and checked on FS and kept in contact just in case things deteriorated.
Coast Guard gave notice to Sea Tow.
Sea Tow readied their crews and equipment and were prepared to execute assist and stayed on standby and in communication with CG.
It’s unfortunate that there was some miscommunication. I’m sure everyone was very worried. End of the day, everyone is safe and has a new beer story to tell.

I have used Sea-Tow before and they have always been Johnny on the spot and the Captains have been very helpful. Glad everyone made it home safe. A few yrs. ago before we repowered we limped in on one motor from about 58 miles out and we would of given anything to be making 9 knots but were able to keep in touch with SeaTow the whole trip and they called family and friends to let them know the situation !!

I know South Island Bait House had it. You could try calling around. Like I said…I cannot say enough about Rescue Tape. It has saved me thousands of dollars and my customers a lot of time getting home. It is in our best interest to get you home as quickly as possible and even under your own power if at all possible. EVERYONE should carry Rescue Tape on their boat.
As for the different fluids, I guess you could use a lot of similar fluids; but I can only recommend you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific system. But if it means getting home or not, then you might want to improvise. haha
Otherwise, rigging the motors to stay straight and using trim tabs is probably the safest way to direct the boat if you steering has failed. Other methods mentioned here work, but it puts a person in a compromising position…in a vessel that is extremely limited in her ability to maneuver in the event of a man overboard. It sounds like Fortunate Son may need a new VHF antenna to go with the steering cylinder repair…
I was wondering if FS was 3 dog night hailing but couldn’t receive.
I see and understand both Anthony’s response and Fortunate Son’s response but sorry, I still side with Fortunate Son. Screw “Gray Area”. I experienced my own “gray area” problem that led me to not re-up my Seatow. I’m sure there’ll be plenty opposed to my opinion but hey… it’s MY opinion (just wait until your “gray area” experience). I already did my thread on my own experience last year and it “vanished”. Alternate courses of action: buddy boat. Definitely always have a solid safety plan, comms (and back-up comms) properly working EVERY time, extra food & water, check floatation devices, etc. A buddy boat would’ve sucked for the buddies towing them in but that’s why we all help one another out. No “gray area” there.
I didn’t intend for this to blow up into this big a thing. The Sea Tow Capt was very professional when we spoke. Had any of that been relayed to us t the time we don’t have a problem… All we wre told was that they weren’t coming… No reason given at the time, and that was several hours after our initial request. My only concern was having a guy off the stern, with a limited ability to execute any kind of MOB rescue. Other than that I have no problem with how it was handled. I am not the bad guy here. I had a difficult situation, did the best I could and got everyone home safely. I have no illl will toward ST and no intention of dropping my membership. As far as I am concerned the matter is closed.
