Unimpressed

aluminum boats withstand impact with rocks ALOT better than fiberglass, which is why rocky areas seem to have more aluminum
fiberglass rides better, and is cheaper to make detailed hull shapes
in the LONG rides we have here in open water, the center console is more comfortable than a tiller

FYI If any of you tower of power owners are in need of some good used parts, carbs, lower unit, cowling or other parts, we have several motors from that era. All are fresh water motors, 2 of which have been in storage for a good number of years. Growing up in W. Cola and skiing on Lake Murray we used to see them all the time and had great sdervice out of a '74 140. Just thought I’d throw this in as we are trying to clean out my Dad"s shop. I can be reached at 843-425-8563

Hey NW - man, if Russ B.(Top2Bottom1) invited me to go out for a little fishing or cruise I’d be jumping on the opportunity. I’ve known him for three years and I’ve never got invited to spend the day with him on the water. He’s as familiar with this area as anybody on the water and as expierenced a boat handler as any waterman in the Lowcountry. That would be a day well spent for you to get to know the area and he might even share some of his “secret” spots with you!

Just be glad you’re NOT in N. C., in June especially July 4th weekend coming up.

One phone call will tell you:

1-1979 TILLER 115 motor, lol and NOT two weeks but 4-6 weeks for repair IF at all.

2-CORRECT; Mercury motors are NOT well liked in N. C., especially near saltwater.

3-WHO would ever want to hold a 115 hp tiller motor for a long ride like we love to take around here?

4-Most people here want a boat that is DIVERSIFIED for creek, harbor, and NEAR shore[jettys etc] too.

Now you understand the carolinas mentality, PLEASE never again say “backhome we did it this way”. Next time you will REELY get an earful, be warned.

Edited to add using the word unimpressed will also get you in trouble here, especially if we have recommended someone and you come up with “unimpressed”.

In the NW a aluminum boat isn’t the same thing as a jon boat around here. They are mainly made from plate alum. 3/16th to 1/4" thick or so and completely welded vs. a much thinnner and lighter jon boat. All the rivers around there are all rock and gravel bottom with a lot of dead tree snags in them as well. In the saltwater one is hard pressed to find a actual ‘sandy beach’ most are all rock or at the best gravel. There isn’t much one can hit up there that is too forgiving to hulls and lower units, not to mention the floating logs in the waters and ‘deadheads’ (soaked log floating vertically with maybe a inch or two sticking up out of water and weighing thousands of pounds) if a person runs aground or hits anything in the water even going slow, chances are there is going to be some hull or lower unit damage or at the least a bent prop. I think there are something like 172 islands up there at hi tide and 226 at lo tide! 8’ average tidal range.

What we used to call ‘crunchies’ yes, those are rocks in the water and this is lo tide! There is a VW sized rock just past these underwater that a buddy snapped his whole lower unit off on!

But where else can you see things like this!

waterfall falling right into the saltwater in teakerene inlet, bc

wait, whoa, the sun is setting over the water!

my old front yard, summertime

my old front yard, wintertime

Jimmys? Pffftttttt!! Dungeness is where it’s at!

Both places definitly have thier merits, great thing about here is one can not only play on the water, but IN it as well without getting hypothermia! A lot more fishing oppurtunities around here as well in the salywater. The boating season really never stops around here as well, can do it year round there too some times, just have to be way hardcore!
Gotta love them plametto trees and sandy beaches!

Capehorn16: My feelings exactly. I’m new. No excuses. To be honest, I’m lving it down here, but am still adjusting. Everyone, please give me some time to figure out how things are done. This is a big cultural change for me and my wife. I’m sure I’ll be putting my foot in my mouth again. Please, cut me some slack.

SCBoatService: Agreed. Like I said, I’m just used to no more than a 2 week turn-around, and didn’t know old Merc tiller handles were such unique motors down here. Now that I know, it’s no big deal.

SaltyDog87: Thanks for that tidbit of info. I’ll keep you in mind, next time I need parts.

MacDaddy: Your comments are noted. However, I think cunstructive criticism should be appreciated at any level. If somebody somewhere else is doing it better, it should be your goal to meet or exceed that level, and not just go about doing it how you’ve always done it because you don’t know any better. My experience on the waters in the NW may be underappreciated here in Charleston, but if you ever want to fish in WA, come to me, and I’ll give you the skinny on what to do and who to contact. This site has been good to me so far. I’ve received a lot of info, and some invites to fish from guys I’ve never even met. True saints, are those guys, and you know who you are. I want to continue that, but I also want to open up new ways of thinking and doing things from my experiences. That’s how we all grow as anglers and people. If people here have a problem hearing about how we did it in WA, for better or worse, than they’re just ignorant, in my opinion, and don’t deserve to have the opportunity to better themselves as people or anglers. I say what I say. Take it or leave it.

T2B: those are some great pictures of the NW coastline. I wish we had dungeness here. People would be using blue crabs for dungeness bait, but I’ll eat a blue crab any night of the week, too. It’s been good to converse with you over the last few months. I’ll definitely take you up on your offer to fish on your bo

unbelievable - that is all I can say. I would beg the site administrator to delete your whole thread.

Second the delete motion…

hey Chris, I have to ask the obvious, did you do a compresion test on that antique before you orderd parts?

Kyle, was at Charleston Marine yesterday and saw your boat. That thing looks like it will run through a brick wall and keep on going…holy crap. Engine looks wicked with the jet on it too. Def one of a kind around here!!!

If at first you don’t succeed, drink another beer!!!

If the place you came from is so nice the road goes both ways carry your arse back and there will be one less for us no nuthins to deal with!

Let’s give NWTransplant a little slack here. He said he was sorry and admitted he was wrong, give the guy a break. He’s active duty military and he’s being deployed. I think any of us would be a little edgy given the circumstances.

There’s no point in beating up on the guy any more.

NW, thanks for your service.
