What spooled me?

spinner shark

strip…strip…FISH ON!

It was probably just an oyster toad fish. The rod works better if you hold it upside down and crank backwards.

Finally, someone got it right.
Thanks skinneej

We had something strip a lot of 65# braid/heavy drag setting at the Grillage recently, and it eventually broke the line. ’ figured it was a shark, as some large ones have been caught there. We were fishing with a chunk of mullet on a Carolina rig, with an incoming tide. The strange thing was, the line seemed to go straight down continually, as though it was going deeper and deeper, as more and more line went out. Maybe the line was under something?

Every fishing trip there is something hard to understand.

I was somewhere offshore Saturday when I hooked a 6++ shark. He almost spooled me. I finally got him beside the boat and he decided to take a second run. I frantically cut the line to keep from getting spooled again and fighting another 30 minutes to get my line back.

My wife’s brother does that all the time! The last time I took him fishing, I threatened to make him swim back from the North Edisto nearshore reef if he didn’t start using it correctly… my (() rod, my (() reel, (**() that makes my blood boil!

Sorry, rant over.

ona,
had that happen too, I think they are pulling line fast enough the weight stays near the bottom, but the fish runs out away from you so your looking down when it jumps 75yds away.

When it broke the leader I reeled in a ways before I felt the swivel hit the sinker. I think this is somewhat normal for a Carolina rig especially using heavy weights.

PINFISH hahahhaa

I like to put beads fore and aft of weight on a Carolina rig to help with that situation…i get em in 2 sizes small on rod end large on buisines end

I have the beads but wondered if maybe the weight would break the line from all the jumping/spinning/thrashing around.
4-6oz chunk of lead flying around cant help the situation.

Rig: Main line to heavy leader, bead, weight, bead, swivel, leader, hook
The weight will ride between the two beads on heavy mono leader of 3-4ft.

I currently use: Main line to heavy leader, weight, swivel, leader, hook.
Weight can freely run up the main line away fromt eh business end.

Is there an advantage here?
