everyone’s theories seem good- definitely infection now whatever got him first.
he might have fallen in with the wrong crowd and made some really bad decisions as a 1.5 year old (is that a crack lighter burn on the nose?), or maybe he did everything right and has just been punted around by that cruel b!tch called life…

Yes - Stripers on the Chesapeake are loaded with Myco. Sick and covered with sores…
The theory is the fish are starving for food and cant fight off the infection. Its a natural infection and most healthy well fed fish can fight off the disease.
Myco is probably in these waters as well - but the fish are typically well fed. This guy may just be weak or was subjuct to a flipper attack - but it looks alot like Mico.
Be careful messing with infected fish. One spike or cut can put a whooping on you - even kill you in a hurry.
I do not think it is pfiesteria which effected fish in the Chesapeake. The Pfiesteria virus was caused by water being polluted from chicken farm runoff. This definitely looks like battle scars that may be infected but appear to be healing.
If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

Myocbacterium is different and still active in the Chesapeake… not saying that what that red has, but thats what the early stages look like - on the fins and around the mouth.
I am only saying this as a warning to be careful with any fish that looks infected and infection you can get from the fish - its a nasty one.
that one is simple…surprised Penny didn’t get it. That fish had been stuck in a crab trap. The wire scratched him up and the crabs ate his fins. We see flounder, sheephead, and blackfish like that alot.

Maybe he caught the Flu ? Seems like everyone else has had it lately…or wait…Mad Cow Disease??? Chemical warfare between fish clans? Is the fish a Muslim woman whose husband threw acid on?

I like sellsfish’s theory. Makes sense. Otherwise, it’s a mycobacterium infection. These are actually in the same genus as tuberculosis and leprosy. The type that infect fish can be transmitted to people (i.e. fish handler’s disease), but do not cause tb or leprosy. These usually cause a rash to develop on people. On the other hand, it could be a fish that got caught in a crab trap, then became infected due to its weakened condition.
Maybe he frequented a house of ill repute and didn’t wash up afterwards.
It actually reminds me of what some fish used to look like that get caught in a crab trap. Crabs start eating on the fins first. Maybe stuck in a trap and then released.
I’d say a definite run in with flipper. Also looks like he has two parasites behind the gill hanging there. As for the mouth I want to say its an infection from the previous person that hooked it and may of did some damage removing the hook or not taking proper care.

Mycobacterium marinum resides on lots of healthy organisms around here and the Chesapeake and parts of Southeast Asia: stripers, redfish, shrimp, blue crabs, barnacles. It is my understanding that oftentimes its presence is not deleterious to the host organism or to an angler who catches, cooks and eats a host organism. The danger occurs when the disease is introduced to even a small cut or abrasion on perhaps your hands or feet. The disease “likes” the temperature of our extremeties (feet and hands). I contracted fish handler’s disease in a finger which required surgery and 8 months of antibiotics and I am the worst angler in Charleston. It is mostly a bad luck thing, like getting struck by lightning. Wear gloves and rinse your hands with bleach or antibacterial soap if your extremeties get pricked while handling a fish, about all you can do.
What did you catch him on??? LOL

Looks like a bad case of diflucus of the blowhole. Could be bocephus of the epizeetus but that usually causes elongation of the pectoral fins.
