quote:Least a month. There was a lot of discussion (probably two years ago) about hooks 'dissolving' or 'rusting' away. I was one of the guys that thought that it would only take week or so. Found a lot of information from a study done in NC that proved me to be foolish in my thinking. The conclusion was to NEVER try to remove a gut hook. Leave a few inches of leader attached to keep the hook oriented in the best direction. The hook and leader will pass through the digestive system before the hood dissolves. OR.. the fish may die but, at least he gets the best chance.

We were expecting to see that bobber running around before we left that spot. Little does he know, I would have set him free without the hook and bobber attached. But he wasnt trying to find that out.
Does anyone know how long that hook may stay in him? Is it a matter of rusting and breaking or can they somehow force it out?
A hook on the lip would probably either have to slip free or rust away. That takes a long time. That’s why I say I like fishing with thin wire hooks that will straighten if a lot of pressure is applied, either by the fish or by a hang-up on an oyster bed.
