01-20-2012 Inshore bite

Played hokie and took the little boat out and about in ICW today. First time in about a month for me fishing. Armed with mudders and shrimp, went looking for the reds. Found a few schools way back away from everything, but they had lockjaw and the light wind had a ripple on the water that ended up being more discouraging.

So I left the low tide spot looking for a dock to drown some bait. Stopped at a dock I haven’t fished in six months or so and found some hungry fish. Caught healthy slots 21"-23" back to back to back. Number four swallowed the hook, so after cutting it off and releasing the fourth fish in about fifteen minutes, I picked up the flyrod to try my luck. Nothing doing. Tried three different flies but they weren’t taking em.

Middle of the incoming tide. Sunny, scattered clouds. Very clear water, easily four foot or more clarity where I was. Live shrimp on carolina rig, that’s all they wanted. They didn’t touch the mudminnows. Get out there and get you some in January. It was a gorgeous Charleston day today. Peeling drags in a short sleeve shirt in January… I can’t imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

Haddrells has very nice feisty shrimp right now. I also saw a bald eagle up close today in the wild, a first for me getting that close.

Sounds like a nice way to spend the day (sure beat mine). Was hoping to make it down myself this weekend but sometimes we are not the masters of our own lives.
