I currently have an ‘01 Johnson 90 hp two strokin’, and still smokin’, yet have an opportunity to get a deal on an '02 Yamaha 115 hp four stroke, with 363 hours and all dealership service records. Being a big fan of “loopers”, what should I know about the Yamaha?
All advice appreciated!!

The Yamaha is a good motor, will not accept crap gas, no mater how many bottle of additive you force feed it. Parts can get expensive. Biggest draw back is the weight, quite a bit more than your V4
The current owner hasn’t sold the motor yet. It’s on a 21’ Sea Pro, and way underpowered. He’s moving up to a 150 Yamaha. As stated before I’m a big fan of OMC Loopers as I’ve owned several with very, very, few problems. It’s just with all of the hoopla of four strokers being so much more economical, and a good deal on this one, I thought I might just bite the bullet and buy one.
Any 115 hp Yamaha owners care to contribute?
And by the way feather thrower, those loopers never croak, they just smoke like they’ve just died!!

Hey Spareparts, I can only find a difference of around 70#s. I don't think that it would make that much difference, would it?
Sort of like running full throttle on an empty fuel tank, compared to running on full??
I do appreciate your input!

something wrong with the weights you have, 115 4 stroke Yamaha comes in around 420, the 90 should be right under 300. Thats one more person in the back of your boat(meaning, have some one around 120 lbs stand in the back to see how she floats)
I saw 362#s on the 90 Johnson, and around 416#s on the Yamaha? This was the result of an internet search, and we all know where that might lead!
Seriously Spareparts, do you have an opinion on the deal I’m looking at? Just asking?..Ol’ Reliable 2 Stroker, and Smoker, or the newer Fabulous Four Stroker?

$0 on filters. No E-10 concerns. No need to buy high dollar oil. etc. etc.
Yes the 4 stroke will sound like a dish washer running instead of a chain saw, and yes you will burn less fuel and no oil. But you will have about the same holeshot and your boat’s running attitude will be different and you have to keep up with the four stroke constantly to keep the fuel and ignition system in tip top shape.
Phin just nailed it. 4 strokes are nice, but they cost $ to keep up. Most people don’t spend the money required, then it bites them pretty bad all at once. properly kept up, 4 strokes tend to outlast 2 strokes. As far as bad gas goes, a 4 stroke will generally run bad and have low power if it gets bad enough gas or a fuel issue, most two strokes keep running pretty good right up till they blow all to hell. If your itching to spend the money, go ahead, just have it checked out real good before you buy

Let’s see, keep my motor for free and spend some money on a nice depth finder, rod and reels and other boat supplies or spend a couple of grand on a new motor that I don’t need to replace a motor that hasn’t given me any problems just because it’s such a good deal.
Oh yea, and I’ll save a few bucks on gas and it won’t smoke and I don’t have to yell at the ole lady over the sound of the 2 stroke.
Note: If you do get the 4stroke, you will have to listen to her more often.
Unlike yours, that OMC Johnson will get better with age. Keep it. It’s a no brainer!
I’d stick with the 2-smoke. I just sold a '00 Key West with a '98 v-4 115 HP Evinrude and it was THE BEST motor I’ve ever owned out of 15+ boats/motors throughout my life. I’m probably gonna regret selling it…
Sure it burned a little more gas than a 4-broke and you had to add oil (@ $13/gallon from Sam’s), but it always started, idled and ran well and had better acceleration than a similar rig with a 4-stroke.
