Well we made the drive down from Greenville last night with dolphin dancing in my head. I read some posts from people saying not to try it but I decided to take a chance. I knew it wasn’t going to happen when we didn’t even get out of the harbor and it was like a washing machine!! Strike one. Tried to find some menhaden behind Ft Sumter and after 6-7 throws we had 1 stinking bait fish. Strike two. Decided to poke our heads just outside the jetties since we drove all the way down from Greenville to make sure and, yep, it was rocking and rolling. Strike three.
We limped over to the near shore reef and fished for a couple hours just to see what we could find. Actually made out pretty good. Caught a keeper Sea Bass and two nice sized Weakfish. I hadn’t caught a weakfish in probably 20 years since I was a kid and it was my favorite fish to eat so I guess the fishing gods threw me a bone for my stubbornness.
All the fish were caught on a flutter jig that I just recently picked up and started using. I must say the thing is magic and puts fish in the boat. Only downside is you foul hook a lot of fish with the way it’s set up, but on the flip side it does well with keeping the smaller fish away.

Nice report and your safety game is on point!

Thank you on both accounts. After reading about several people being thrown overboard on boats and others who got stuck with no way to summon help I decided to invest the money and do it right. I never used to use the kill lanyard, but after reading about a guy who got thrown from the helm after hitting a large wave and getting rocked by a huge wake not too long ago myself I started to realize how bad things could get real quick! Now I have an auto-tether, PLB, and handheld VHF that all attach to my auto-inflate vest for when I go anywhere outside the jetties.

was wondering how y’all did. I believe we were possibly the first boat there when y’all showed up. We only went a mile past the nearshore, and then turned around to spare our kidneys and vertebral discs.
we managed a nice slot black drum on artificial, one million black bass, a few other odds and ends, and a couple sharks. After we left, we found the menhaden (plus a bonus ribbonfish) in front of morris island today in about 5 feet of water. and then slow trolled/drifted for kings which produced one short strike on a live pogy that missed the stinger hook. amazed that my beautiful ribbonfish rig didn’t get at least sniffed at. Then we threw live pogys all up and down the creeks with only one bluefish bite. Can’t win em all. At least the wind was nice enough inshore/nearshore to keep the heat at bay.
How’d that Ipilot worked out for you in that breeze?
I have that auto tether and occasionally it will trigger for no reason. Makes for a good time with an Engine kill at 40mph! Be careful with it. Ive had mine serviced with all new batteries and it still misfires.
Thanks for the report.

Millacd,
Sounds like you had a decent day on the Plan B like we did. I think we didn’t go shallow enough for the menhaden. We were throwing in 7-10 ft and I got impatient with it and gave up. The trolling motor is actually a 72" Rhodan 24v and it worked like a charm in the nasty slop. The anchor feature held us solid when I needed and all the moving around we did around you was with the TM. I had an Ipilot on my old boat, but I got sold on the 72" shaft, jog feature, and the fact they say the 24v version of their motor will work for a boat of my size (which it does!).
Tridogs,
No misfires yet with my autothether, but I did have to send back the first fob as the solder for the battery wire broke. I wasn’t too impressed with that, but when I called the company a real person answered and sent me out a new one next day shipping with a pre-paid return label for the broken one.

Awesome safety gear. It looks a bit warm for the summer but you would def be the one i’d have my money on in an emergency situation.

Nice catch and also the safety gear, think I’m gonna try a ditch bag but hope I don’t fall overboard. I have started wearing my lanyard while running. Haven’t tried the auto tether, didn’t know they made them.

Where’s your helmet? Looks like all your missing. Might not drown but watch out for a heat stroke.
Dang, looks like you were boarded by the Coasties and they took a pic with your shark.
How do you like the truck tent? I’ve always thought I might like one of those.

We love it. Saves us over $120 every trip on a hotel room and we are right at the ramp in the morning when we wake up.
