First off, I absolutely love this motor! This is my first 4 stroke, and have really enjoyed it. I have two little issues I need some answers for. Whenever I pull the boat off the trailer it always dies the first time I put it in reverse. It cranks right back up and doesn’t do it again. Any idea what would cause this? The second issue started two trips ago. I like fishing the flood tides, so when I pull into the grass I trim the motor all the way up. When I get ready to leave the boat has trouble cranking. It will fire, then cough, sputter and die. The only way to crank the motor is as soon as it fires up throw it into gear quickly, but still takes a couple tries… Then it runs fine. It only happens after the motor is trimmed up, but not every time. I expect this with a 2 stroke, but not a 4. Wondering if it is a filter, water (I do have a separator), any ideas. Thanks as always for he help.

Anybody??? My neighbor suggested the injectors. Could that be the problem? Thanks

I’ll take a shot. Next time you pull up to the grass don’t tilt motor all the way up. Just tilt it up enough so that it is not dragging.
My guess is with a 4 stroke you have a crankcase full of oil and tilted all the way up you have the oil sitting against parts that it wasn’t designed to sit against. But it’s only a guess. 2 stroke wouldn’t have that issue.
If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

what rpm does the engine idle at?
it sounds more like a sensor or synch issue

I have a 2008 Yamaha 150hp 4 stroke and mine will do the same thing when I raise it. I have learned to lower the motor let it sit for a few and prime the bulb. After doing those things it starts up and runs fine. Not sure about the motor turning off when unloading. Could be injectors as others have suggested. I have also found that dying batteries can make a motor do strange things.
