Overslept and started the day at the crack of 0700hrs with a cool, windy ride under bluebird skies. I’ve had so much fun on topwaters lately that I stuck with it for the first two hours on main shell points with a few blow-ups but no takers.
Main channels are full of 5-8" mullet so I caught a bucket full and tried both under popping cork and soaking on c-rig. Again no takers. I was getting frustrated but the tide had turned so I decided to adjust and give it another hour.
I moved to deeper structured channels with the C-Rigs and found a big school of big reds!
First fish that came to the boat was just over slot at 26". Next two fish were 18 & 20" flounder! But after that, the reds went into feeding frenzy. I couldn’t even get my bait to the bottom before there was a 28-32" fish on. If there were more flounder there, they were bullied by the reds.
I had them all to myself for the first 4-5 fish but all the activity started getting some attention. There were enough to go around so I waved nearby boats over and pointed out the spot and we all continued to hook into these drag burners. There was hooting and hollering from every boat.
After about a dozen fish were caught & released, I was re-rigging a straightened hook when I realized that for the first time ever, that I didn’t care if I caught another fish. Relinquished my spot to a boat that hadn’t seen any action yet and saw them hook-up as I pulled off. Home to clean flounder and reflect on a very good day.
