Actually found the time to get down Sunday for a family boating trip so serious fishing was never on the table. The spouse wanted to crab so I nosed up into a small creek so she could feed the crabs and I tossed a jighead with a mud minnow off the stern figuring there was no way I would catch anything. Imagine my surprise when I got a hit and the reel started singing. The water was really muddy so for the first minute or so I couldn’t even tell what I had. Twice it shot into the grass and I was worried I would lose it. I finally got it within sight and saw that it was a nice red. Just when I thought I had it beat, my rod broke. I was able to land the fish but suffered a broken All-Star ASR Snook model. The top 6-8" of the rod just snapped. I just bought it last year so it was still under warranty but dang, I am a little disappointed to say the least.
As for the fish, he was about 29" so not a keeper. You’ll notice on the picture he was bleeding a little. He was hooked in the bottom of the mouth (tongue area) so I don’t really know where all the blood came from. I was worried about him surviving but when I put him in the water to revive him, he gave me a big splash and took off. Hopefully he was okay.

Well it’s about time D…LOL…just kidding…I know you’ve been wanting to get down here for a while now…Glad you got to come to Chuck town and get ya a redfish!!!..Nice looking fish too!!

Dont worry. Ill bet the fish will be fine. Good job, but sux about the rod. Ive had an All star for 6 years that finally broke a month ago while fighting a 16 lb red. It WAS my favorite rod. Oh well! Theyll make more.
Nice fish D

Rods get broken several ways. Most common is caught in some kind of door. The other is wrong drag setting.Nice fish.

Fantastic Doug! Glad you laid into such a nice fish! MM/Jig usually gets their attention if they are around. Give me a call next time you get in town and maybe we can meet up.

nice fish, man!
i bet he’ll be fine too- if no known damage to gills, they stop bleeding very soon and are amazingly quick at healing.
pat and D, i broke my favorite rod last year- an allstar inshore special- after like 7 years of slaying fish. i broke it because i was trying to bill dance a leader out of the oysters. stono called it- while palming the drag.
I initially had the drag too loose and he was running hard. I may have tightened it down too much in my enthusiasm. Went to Bass Pro Shop yesterday to see about an exchange because it is less than a year old. They told me All-Star won’t allow dealers to make such exchanges and gave me their contact info. They indicated that it should not be a problem getting a new rod.
Hey Vince, if you notice, it was your schooling (jighead & MM) that caught him. I’ll definitely give you a holler when I get back home and plan to head your way.
