took my first crack at the menhaden schools over the weekend and decided to introduce a friend to it. before this, his biggest yak catch was maybe a 14" bass and although he did great bottom fishing in diego garcia over breaks in deployment and is learning fast, he is still pretty new to fishing. there was no shortage of bait and we saw what looked like a tarpon smashing bait before we launched, but it was gone by the time we got out there. it took a while to get the first hit, but i ended up getting an 18" sail cat and a 4 foot finetooth shark. my friend on the other hand only got 1 but it was a 6.5 foot blacktip! he got towed around for 30 minutes, 10 of which were me trying to catch up to him to gopro the ordeal, but was able to land it like a champ. 14" bass to 6.5 foot blacktip is a steep learning curve so i think ive successfully made a new fisherman the link to the video of the ordeal is below.
