10-1 Fishing and Gigging

I’ve been wanting to get out gigging for a couple weeks now. So I decided to go fishing for a few hours and see what the water was looking like. To my surprise the water clarity was the best I’ve seen yet this year. Now that I was excited about gigging I figured I better go get some fishing done so I can get back home and get the other boat ready.

It was just before lowtide when I got on the water. I grabbed my net and rounded up some mullet and shrimp and headed for the area I wanted to fish. I wasn’t fishing long before the action started I caught several rat reds and a dozen small trout for the first hour or so. I moved around quite a bit trying to find some larger fish. Finally I caught a few nice sized trout and three overslot reds. Most of the fish were caught with live shrimp on a popping cork and a couple were caught with Trout Tricks and Zman shrimp. With a great day of fishing over I headed home to get the gigging rig ready.

I rebuilt my gigging rig this year and have only been able to go twice since. So I convinced my neighbor who had never been gigging to go out with me and I’m glad he did we had a great time. The water was flat as could be with no wind and the best water clarity I’ve seen in a while. We saw tons of small flounder along with quite a few overslot reds

nice fish and rig…thats some stay in the boat railings there! what kind of lights do you use?..and is that non skid stuff on the front deck?

“you win some, you lose some…but nothing beats getting some!”

Very nice! Where were you gigging?

Hey Penny, Yes the stay in the boat railings sure makes everyone feel better but the real reason I had them built was for mounting my lights. I used to have a 12 volt setup and just recently changed to halogen with a generator. That is why I put the platform on the back. I strap my little honda eu2000 on the platform. originally my boat had no deck in the front I added the deck and hatch cover for somewhere to stand and more storage. I plan on adding some nonskid to the deck and a few other things just havn’t had the time to finish it up. Here are a few more pics.
