Another great day at Bushy. Put in the canoe around 6:30am this morning as soon as it was bright enough. Didn’t catch much bait at the dock, and I’m not slinging a 7’ cast net from a canoe with a 4 year old boy in it with me, so we tossed artificials most of the day. OhioNavyNuke was kind enough to donate a couple dozen finger mullet, but the hit was all on jigs. Sorta.
My son got something attacking his cork (not the finger mullet, but the cork), and it didn’t seem like a sea trout. It was rather violent. I had a suspicion about it, and turns out I was right (striper!).
Also, tried out my DIY oars and oarlocks. The oars are great, but the oarlocks I made are crap (which is to be expected for a first time endeavor). I’ll make better ones for next time. Today, sore back lol. But not as sore as it would have been with a regular paddle, even though I can paddle a canoe properly.
Wind was NUTS. Drove us crazy, but didn’t stop us from having fun.
Anyhow, the good part. Total catch of the day— two undersized trout, released. One overslot redfish (24.5") released. Three keeper flounder (16, 17, 17"), to make the grand slam. But then, right near the end, I pulled off what I guess you could call “The Bushy Park Four Play” (boy does that sound a bit risque’). We boated a 16" striped bass, which we released unharmed.
Flounder will be filleted here shortly .
EDIT: I forgot it was all the rage to white out the surrounding landscape, so I corrected this so y’all wouldn’t know my super-secret spot within paddling distance from the boat ramp in Bushy Park, on the south side, near a creek, in about 3’ of water at mid tide on a trout trick.
My son, when I say thro
