Fished the Maverick tourney on Saturday and was lucky enough to fish with Captain Mike Able and Robbie from Palmetto boat sales. We were in a Pathfinder 25’ hybrid which is an amazing boat. I think there may be one in my future.
We started out on the waterway fishing topwater, but despite seeing tailing spot tails and them blowung up bait no luck until we put some mud minnows on under corks. Had some smallish reds and a couple of trout. Went back into some creeks and caught more trout and reds, nicest trout where in the 15” range, reds a bit bigger. Still couldn’t get anything on plastics.
We then hit the harbor, came out thru Breach Inlet and the 25 hybrid just ate up the
chop. Mike filled up the llivewell with big menhaden in two throws, just out of the inlet on the Sullivans side. Motored down to a couple more harbor spots, lost something decent that could have been a bull, and got one shark to the boat.
Decided to head up the Wando. Through all the chop and wakes kept going at a steady
45 ish, didn’t even need to play with the trim. Did I mention how good a boat this 25’ is?
Hit some spots on the outgoing and Robbie and Mike we’re getting some nicer reds. Mike picked up some trout on artifacts. I had my first Gar. Tried a couple more spots with us all picking up some nice trout and reds mostly on minnows under a cork. I hadn’t had a decent sized red and at this point we were going to call it a day as it was lines at at 4 and it was close to that. I said “”one more cast” and wouldn’t ya know it I actually had my best red of the day on that last cast!
Ride back to tolers, and then went down to Ripley marina for dinner, drinks and awards. If you have a boat in the maverick family I would def recommend doing this event next year, lots of fun, low key, good people. Also a huge thanks to Robbie and Mike for having me. A really enjoyed their company and as usual I learned some stuff. Now I just need to convince my wife/cfo that I need that hybrid!
Cheers.
