My wifes first trip out started a little rocky. Had to stop for dranamine drinks ect so the guys were waiting for us at the ramp. Headed out a little late but got out to about 200’ just after sunrise. Dropped 4 lines in at 830 and hours and a half later there had been 0 action. Got a daizy chain on the reccomendation on the guys here and had it out for the first time. We decided to try some bottom fishing. Hit the first spot and had 4 limits on vermillions pretty quickly. Caught a few golden with blue stipes fish with a really big mouth that were small (ID?) Decided to try to get a grouper and headed to another spot. Almost limited on BSB there. I caught 2 vermillions on a sabiki and my buddy landed the biggest BSB I have ever seen and I caught the biggest Bliner I have ever seen. Another guy landed one of the endangered ARS which was succesfully ventilated and released. I also caught something that looks like a inbetween of a cobia and a remora. Long black and slender but with white bars (ID?) No grouper but a heck of a day anyway compliments of a new addition to ThreeDogNights boat, a Minn Kota Ipiolt Riptide!

You sure those weren’t rock hind grouper?

ipilots are the best thing for bottom fishing on a calm day!!

Blue striped grunt is the only thing I can think of. They don?t have a noticeably large mouth but commonly grows to a length of 8 to 10 inches. Hope that helps.

Excellent tablefare, just add ketchup.

I actually did catch one grunt but that fish was a young golden tilefish. still dont know what the other one is. will put up a picture here shortly
.

Don’t be hating on the “orange mouth snappers”
We soak em in peanut oil and they eat pretty good.
( I’m not a fan of Ketchup )

the other one was a banded rudderfish. are they good to eat?

rudders are excellent table fare. and what you caught was a Bank sea bass “Kelp Bass”. I highly doubt you caught a Golden shallower than 400’

yea no where near that far out. We did catch some of those kelp bass too. how close in are the blue tilefish. From the picture those are identical?

Maybe a Sand Tile? I have caught a few on the ledge.
