We went on a live bait / fun run yesterday. McMarine, my sons friend Tommy and I rolled out after daybreak, and were met with a pond flat ocean. You could have took a jon boat to the 60 yesterday! It was nice to see them adding structure to the Chs. Nearshore reef. We screwed around catching hardtails and greenies, and then pushed out about 15 miles, where huge schools of little tunny (bonita) were churning up the water. Caught a bunch for bait and chum (mako fishing in Dec.) Ran out to 135’ and caught a bunch of big triggers and football B-liners, an ARS, ■■■■■■■■■, and a nice Gag. It was so nice we decided to run out to SWB and work the ledge for Scamps. Did I mention that we did not anchor all day, not once! On the ledge, the bite was hot, and Joe put on a clinic in live bait fishing! He caught a multitude of grouper species, Scamp, yellow mouth, graybe, red hind. Poor Tommy got sick of reeling up “endangered red porgys”. We already had nine in the box, so they all went back. The little p-nut dolphin showed up, and a few came home (no pictures due to being so small, we will get harassed!). Ran in at 35, and it was quite the site, seeing all the “scrimpers” at crab bank. Thanks again Kyle, we had a blast!

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
Hey Sells, thanks for defending my peanut post last week or so…nice grupas and ars. Glad to see the butterfly works on tunny (bonita), I have had no luck with them with mahi. We were out fishing the sailfish slam yesterday, got 2 sails and ran into a crazy tree on the way back in loaded with peanuts and gaffers in 60’. Tagged a few nuts and eating the gaffers tomorrow. What an awesome ocean!
Sells do you ever NOT catch fish or catch fish that are just normal or mediocre (sp)? or do you just not post them? You are definitely the fishing GOD around here!!!

What would be your technique on catching the kings under these bonita? I ran into the same thing about 6 miles shy of Y-73 last saturday…I didn’t know what they were…I was throwing a Gotcha Lure at them with no luck…What is the best to throw at the bonita to get them on? Sells I know you have the best advice here!
I 2nd that! That video is AWESOME! I have a video that looks just like it, just “NOT AS GOOD” We got close but most of the time they got a good ways away as soon as we did. Had 1 stent were we drifted up on them with motor shut down and they stayed a minute or 2 but no video footage of that

What are you trying to catch bonita for? Cutting em up for strip baits or just fun on light tackle?
On that topic, strip baits are very popular down in south fla but I have not seen people use them much up here in Charelston. Or maybe they do and i’m just not fishing with the right folks…
