10/30 Pre-halloween goodies

Got on the water early a.m. to wade for some fish in the grass. As I was paddling in the pre-dawn darkness I heard a distinct “slurp” near a grass island, made a cast to see who was home and it was on. Every cast for the next 30 or so minutes was either catch or miss a trout. Most were barely legal with a few decent ones. Caught 16 and left them biting to look for reds. Finally found a flat holding a few fish. They were not schooled up yet but in pairs and 3’s, not spooky at all and grown!!! Landed 2, 1-34" and 1- 32" both hooked within 10’ of my kayak. Lost 2 others same size.It was a perfect morning back at the truck by 11:30. Kiawah/Capt. Sam’s area. All fish were caught on gulp shrimp new penny color (went through 2 packs).

How did you rig them?
Thanks,

In the morning when the tide was high I just used a 1/8 ounce jig head. As the tide dropped and I was in shallow I used an offset worm hook rigged “texas style” with a doa pinch weight on the shank to make the shrimp ride upright.

Did you fish in the inlet or were you actually in Capt. Sams creek? I have fished there many times without catching red drum.

The trout were caught at the mouth of a little creek coming off capt. sam’s creek. The redfish were all caught near the inlet. I went back out tonight but reached the flat too late as it was already flooded to the grass. Spooked 2 fish from the tall grass and missed one on the edges. Kind of struck out but saw great sunset and had a nice paddle. I have fished this area for a while now and do well on reds in # as well as size. I caught my largest inshore red ever here 2 years ago coming in at 44" on 1/2 a blue crab while kayak fishing for bonnetheads.

How often do you get out on the water ? I am in town now with my kayak and will be headed out for the next few mornings. I usually bring my boat but I decided to give my kayak some attention for the first time in a while.

Where do you leave from to head out? When i go, i leave from beachwalker county park but that is closed now. Do you have a house on Seabrook?

I try to get on the water in some way (kayak, boat or wade) every day but the 8 month pregnant wife and the nasty little work habit seem to get in the way sometimes so I probably average 3-4 days a week. I go early mornings on weekends and evenings and nights during the week. Fish bite after dark and I have a headlamp. I went wading this afternoon at the “secret spot” on Kiawah but only managed 2 small reds, 1 trout and lost one other nice bass. I live on Seabrook so to fish Capt. Sam’s I either put in at the bridge if I want to fish the back of Kiawah too or I will put in at the crab dock on Seabrook. I use the Rhett’s Bluff landing on Kiawah some also but only when the wind permits.
Flyreds: I can’t go in the morning again until Sunday but if you are interested e-mail me at captclintonbeck@prodigy.net
