Any of you guys going today? I’ll be there around noon. I have to work first. I have a BIG honey do list for tomorrow, so I’m going to take advantage of this afternoon. Good luck, and I’ll post a report sometime later.
Well, my day got long at work, but I finally got to get there around 3 Friday afternoon. Immediately got bait and ran to hot spot #1, but it wasn’t so hot. So, I ran out to the jetties and decided to get in line and drift. Picked up 2 short flounder, then 2 keepers at 19.5" and 18". Next drift I got a nice one right at the boat and he came unbuttoned somehow. It kinda makes you sick to see a nice fish come off like that, but oh well. Final fish was a 29" red. Got a few bites with no hook ups out there too. I ran back into the not so hot spot before I had to go home and picked up another 20" flounder against the grass on a mud bank, and was then startled by a loud kazoo. Actually, it was 2 guys in a duck boat attempting to call some sea gulls and ibises in. I had to chuckle. Between those guys and the gnats, I decided to go home. By the way, it ain’t duck season in SC yet you wahoos, but then again, maybe y’all were just scouting the merganzers for opening day a month and a half away. LOL
10-4 on the duck hunters breaking the laws. I was sitting in my deer stand on family owned land last year about an hour before sun-up. Here comes this loud running boat straight up into the cove. I’m thinking this is awfully early for the bass fishermen to be out. The boat runs up on the bank about 75 yards from me and all of these flashlights come on and start heading up and down the bank. The guys are talking loud enough to wake the dead, crashing through the woods and shining lights every which way. I gave up on seeing a deer and as soon as it was light enough to see came quietly down out of my stand. I hollered to the guys “You do know that it’s against the law to hunt within 300 yards of a home without permission don’t you?” No answer, complete silence. So then I said " Well I guess I’ll have to give the SCDNR a call". At that point the limbs started crackling as they all made haste back to their boat and left in a roar. It looks like our mercury vapor light would have indicated to them that they were very near a home. Some folks are just covered up with dumb. Either that or they just don’t care. I only was concerned because a couple of years ago the duck hunters were raining shot down on our roof in a similar situation. Looks like they would be smart enough to check an area out before hunting there. Another brilliant duck hunter actually acted like he was fishing (complete with rod and reel). I was out fishing and noticed that he had a nice lab with him and he wasn’t casting his hook out with any bait on it. I eased up to his boat and asked if he was catching anything. Couldn’t miss seeing his shotgun beside him. I reminded him in a friendly manner of the laws about duck hunting near homes up here and he then had the gall to say he appreciated the warning, but he wasn’t hunting, he was fishing. That’s when I asked him what he expected to catch without any bait. At which point he grimmaced, wound in the cork and empty hook and left. I know only a few sleazeballs give most of the true sportsmen a bad name, bu
I hear ya spoonmaster. Unfortunately, duck hunting has become more of a social event rather than hunting. Everybody and their cousin do it now. That’s the main reason I gave up hunting public waters and went back into the swamps around the house. If they come in there, they know they are trespassing, and we have had a good time with a trespassers on several occassions before DNR arrived. You’re also right about a few making many look bad. I have no idea what those guys I saw were up to, but I know it isn’t duck season, and those gnats couldn’t have been too much fun to deal with.
I think teal season is in. It opens up earlier than regular duck season. That might have been why they were out there. Who knows. I’m with Goozeman…I like to hit the swamps for duck hunting. Actually getting excited about duck season (as well as fall fishing). It’s the first winter I haven’t been on a wrestling mat in 7 years!! I’m going to take advantage of it!!

Teal season went out on September 30. I don’t know what they were doing, but oh well! Glad you have some free time Boogie! I had to retire from coaching football this season. I miss it, but work and kids have taken up all the time I spent on the field last year.
I’m still doing football. Just cut out the other ones!
