10 wt

What use would I have for a 10wt?

Sharks, Tarpon, Jacks, if you head South Tarpon, Permit, etc.

anytime you want to fish large flies in deep water with lots of current, a 350+ sinking line is the ticket… or fishing a floating/intermediate for larger, more powerful quarry: spooky poons in shallow water, jacks, bull reds, large strippers, cobia, mahi, kings. also good to catch little tunny w/o them getting to backing…
from personal experience, its better to have one rigged for the occasion, than to wish you did

As above. Heavy sinkers and bigger species. I take a 10 with me on just about every outing.
That being said, for the average redfisherman, it might only be helpful in 5-10% of your fishing endeavors.

Thanks. I might have a deal on a 10wt and although I don’t have a need for it at the momoent, if it works out I could really get it for a song.

Make sure it has some back bone, we broke as few that did not this past spring.

Shadowgrass,
Do you do a dead weight test? My casting instructor from years ago suggested a 7-8 wt should be able to lift 3# and a 9-10 should beable to lift 5#

I use a 10wt from the surf. 10wt intermediate line helps cheat the wind. taking mine in this year in October when some nice big reds and 3’ sharks are close in the surf. regretted leaving it home last year. biggest red beached was about 20lbs and 3’ long could have easily hit it with a fly cast! finger mullet seaducer pattern would have been the ticket!

If it is really windy.

I have a old BL5 winston rod that came with a video of them dead lifting 45 lbs and that thang was bent into the cork. 2 cinder blocks. i use it for Jacks, big refish flies on windy days, and dem big ol Alaskan King Salmon. it is a great rod for dolphin, albacore, etc as well. it can easily handle fish to around 50 lbs

get the 10 man, i use mine almost as much as the 8, perfect like capt newman said for the sinkin line, great for the spottail spawn in deep water in the fall and early winter

I agree. 10 wt is very useful. Stripers, bull reds, jacks, permit, small tarpon, etc.

I REALLY like throwing my 10 wt. intermediate from the beach for snook in Jupiter. Yes, it can be done with an eight or nine (I have tried both), but the 10 wt. set up is the bomb.

My daughter caught an 80 lb. tarpon on my 10 as well. I don’t recommend this though.

WIND!

Has anyone on here actually caught a bull red from the surf on the fly? I’m sure it could be done but imagine it would take lots of patience and a very very strong casting arm if you are casting all night/day.

Tarpon, Permit, Big ass cuda, small gators, passing cars, deer and snagging 6 packs from a cooler on the beach from 70 feet into a 20 mph wind.

I’m going for Reds in the surf this October from the yak in the Outer Banks. Plan on using the 10 and an intermediate and shooting head. I have no idea if i’ll have any luck or not, just guessing i have a slight chance.

Too Busy, I have never done a dead test, but I have relied on other sites on the web for such tests. These type of tests do help in tackle choice. MM told me about a clip about a year ago about reels tested by motor cycle. The clip sold me on a nautilus. I guess I am a sucker for tackle that is used and abused and proves itself. I also LOVE buying from american tackle companies.
