100 ft bottom bumping

Ventured out with a buddy boat Saturday 4/28. Ocean was unbelievably calm…if you stayed home Saturday you truly missed a great weather window.

Passed some large healthy looking sargassum weed lines in 70ish feet, but water was still 66 degrees and green. Arrived at some bottom numbers in 105 feet and my buddy boat immediately saw a big king sky. Lots of flying fish around, water temp 67. Made a few drifts to get a feel for things, and promptly landed four of the largest sharpnose sharks I have ever seen. Crap. Current was moving about 1.5 knots so we got anchored on some good bottom, which kept us out of the sharks. Small-but-keeper beeliners and a 20 lb red snapper kept us busy for a bit. Buddy boat opted to drift and mostly jig.

Ran out another 3 miles and current slowed and then reversed. Got on a pile of smaller trigger fish and a few smaller 1-2 lb red snappers.

Never saw another king all day. I did fish some live bait behind the boat while anchored but no takers.

Wind picked up slightly out of the SW, and ran back in to 70 feet. Lots of small fish but nothing worth staying on so headed home. Last 10 miles the wind cranked up, probably the sea breeze.

Saw maybe three other boats all day. Not the most stellar day fishing, but 1) it beat sitting home wishing I had went and 2) glad we went Saturday and not Sunday…it’s honking out there today!
