The NO PROBLEM, 58’ Viking from Dock Holiday’s Marina, North Myrtle Beach SC, Weighed in a 1062 Pound Blue Marlin, while fishing in the Ocean City White Marlin Tournament!! Setting a New Maryland Sate Record.
Until they change the rules, I don’t think you can fuss at the competitors. As many know I frequently fish on an all-release boat in SC Gov Cup. And that is fun and a good time. But, when I get on a kill boat for Big Rock, the rules are different and I go by them. I too wish we could figure out a good way to have competition without the kill, though. Observers work in some locales, but not here. Can we come up with a format to present to tournament organizers so they can have a successful tournament without the kills? Anybody got a solution that works, please let me know. By the way, cameras don’t work in every situation. Do we all have to equip our boat with multiple video cameras? That would also leave out a large part of the fleet who can’t afford it.
each boat that enters the tournament is required to furnish an observer. the observer would be randomly assigned to ride on one tournament boat per day. this would be not be too difficult to accomplish. the only wrinkle would be the ability of these observers to distinguish between sailfish/white marlin and white marlin/blue marlin.
require cameras and then display each photo at the tournament dinner for all to see. if anyone wants to contest a fish, go for it. while getting the camera shot is annoying and difficult at times, this would add an element of fun. just as it is now easier to “catch” billfish b/c all we do is touch the leader or have the leader touch the rod tip, having to photograph the fish makes it more difficult. In effect, it is comparable to having to gaff the fish. therefore, having to photograph the fish could be considered a skill. and i know that displaying 100% of the photos at the tournament awards dinner would make the awards dinners a well attended event, perhaps even the highlight of the tournament.
congrats on the grander. that is quite a fish. guess we should all be entering the megamillions jackpot at the megadock.

this may sound stupid but what about those cameras they use for crime scenes than scan an area for future investigation
im sure they are VERY expensive but i wonder if they could be used to accurately measure lenth and girth
Where’s the outrage to seeing this fish dried out compared to the comments on the dried out sail the last 2 weeks?I would think a big 1062# sow blue would be much more important to the future of billfishing than a ~40# sail.Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?PS-Edited to add- Congrats!* on the winning catch and I would have dried her out too.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Carla Dee, I agree with your statements about a random observer, or with the photographs. I just don’t see the need to keep killing these fish…Maybe we should have tournaments hunting and killing idiots and a$$holes…Im all for that, there would never be a shortage there, and no danger of them going extinct either!!

Every major tournament I fished in with my father in the 80’s and 90’s required that you have an IGFA certified observer on board. Is an observer not required anymore? Who regulates the call in for releases?
Sorry to hijack the thread…congrats on the big blue.
No matter how you change the rules, if the chance of brigging a BIG fish to the dock is taken out, the tournamnets will lose some excitement and the ability to bring people that do not own or fish on one of teh boats. What happens to the big calcutta money if a fish can’t be dried out? Can you still have something like that? How? When the buzz goes out that so and so has a huge fish and is expected back at so and so time and all of those people start showing up to see it, people that didn’t even fish, that will be lost. They won’t show up to see pictures. I know there is the Gov Cup points and I am sure there are boats that that is their primary goal, but I think alot of boats want to win that calcutta and brag!
I would be nice if none had to be killed, but it is one of if not the best managed fishery by recreational fishermen there is. You don’t hardly ever here anyone “drying” one out unless there is a tourny anymore. That being said, I think they are OK. There is no perfect answer. You take the chance of a big fish to teh dock out and you propably lose some participation and sponsors don’t like that. You leave that chance in and some fish will be killed
