He took his F-I-L’s pontoon out the other day that’s just been repowered with a larger Tohatsu engine.
Apparently, the oil reservoir is under the cowling. There’s a place to pour oil, and it doesn’t mention 2-stroke oil. Nowhere in the manual does it say use 2-cycle oil ANYWHERE.
The oil light was on, and he went into a “marina” and picked up some good ole 10W-30 and poured it in. He said he ran it the rest of the day, and the oil light came on again, and the reservoir was about empty…
He came to me today in somewhat of a slight panic, but I didn’t have much info for him. HONESTLY, I could not believe it worked and it didn’t fry the engine. I’m about as ignorant about boat motors as it gets, but I’m not THAT STUPID, thank God!
So – suggestions?
I said drain whatever you can, possible, and add the 2-cycle stuff and cross your fingers. Any better advice?
I used to have a Tohatsu on a Pontoon. ( the best motor I have ever owned! That thing was the most reliable boat motor I have ever seen) I have run Motor oil in it several times when I had too. I say leave it in there and burn that stuff. I have used it in weed eaters, and other two cycle engines. I think he will be just fine. simply get some 2-stroke and top it off.
I think 2 stroke oil is a little thinner but no harm no foul, Hell better to use Motor oil than no oil thats for sure.
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
Lights On!
30 weight motor oil is what was used in the old days before they made 2 stroke specific oil.
livin at the beach
what he said
golf carts in the 60’s and 70’s used straight 30w motor oil mixed with gas. todays two stroke oil just mixes better and doesn’t foul plugs as bad. No harm done.
