I dragged the boat down to Summerville Saturday night to crash at my best friend’s house. Me, my best friend and his father were hitting the water bright and early Sunday morning. Even though we hadn’t been on the salt in a while, there were high expectations that night and Sunday lived up to them. We splashed the boat at Remley’s around 0630 and slowly made our way to our first spot. We figured we had roughly 3 1/2 to 4 hours left of outgoing tide so we came up with a game plan and headed to our first spot.
Water temp was around 60 degree and had good clarity. Trout started coming over the side of the boat within a few casts. I was throwing a Z-Man EZ ShrimpZ, my buddy was throwing a Z-Man 4" Scented PaddlerZ and his dad was thowing a Z-Man 3" MinnowZ. Me and my buddy were busy slinging short trout over the side and then throwing them back when his dad say, “Hey guys.” We looked back as we hear the drag start singing and see his rod doubled over. You could tell by the shaking of the rod is was a head shaking trout…and a good one. I get the net out of storage (I never get the net out ahead of time because it’s bad luck on my boat. HaHa!) and after a couple of short sprints up and down the side of the boat, I net this beauty…
She was right at 21" but weigh 4.75 pounds and she felt every bit of it when I lifted her with the net. A coupe of quick picks and back to making casts for another. As a funny side note, this is the same fish but because of what we like to call “doing the Chuck Adams pose,” It looks twice as big. Lol!
As quick as it started, this spot went quiet so we powered on to a spot that is a relatively new spot for us. It’s a small creek that we had only been way back into two other times back during the late spring/early summer timeframe so we were curious if it would hold fish in the fall/winter…
Great stuff! The trout really are fat this year aren’t they? That is a great fish. Gotta love the MinnowZ!
I took a friend who is new to the salt and was able to guide him to his first ever flatty on artificial and his first ever inshore slam. That was gratifying, he is “hooked” now!

They definitely are! It’s awesome when you can get someone on a “first.” Yesterday was the first time all three people caught a slam on the same trip in my boat. My buddy’s dad is already wanting to schedule our next trip. Lol!! It is on and now is the time to get after’em!
Thanks Dave!

Glad y’all had a great day bang. I was using a chatterbait for a while but only caught big ones so I quit with it.Don’t like anything too large on my trout rig.haha
Thanks for the fantastic report. I wish I could find a guide that fishes for trout and reds, that doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg. hard to hire a guide for just one person.

You don’t need a guide this time of year, with all this great info on Charleston fishing.Just get out early and stay late, keep them baits in the water. You can do it.

As far as guides go, you get what you pay for so if you’re going to go that route, to skimp on the guide is to skimp on the experience. Granted, if you don’t have a boat, I can see why a guide would be necessary.
To echo sman, there is tons of great information and incredibly knowledgeable people on this forum. Read archives and simply ask people. Granted, if you ask someone openly on the forum, you may not get as many details and specifics as you would if you spoke to them off the forum or by PM. I’ve found most are very forthcoming with information but there’s no better teacher than time on the water. There’s something to be learned every time you hit the water.
