In most things bigger is better. Is that true with Kayaks? 11’ would be easier to handle getting in and out of my truck. Is the extra 2 feet worth the weight? Does a 13’ track better than a smaller kayak as a general rule…easier to handle on the water…considering no rudder to start with.
I am new to the kayak idea. I have a 120 acre lake by my house so I could get some great exercise and practice. My outboard fishing boat just sits on the trailer…wishing that I would take it out more.
smaller yak is easier to load /unload
longer yak is faster, tracks better, and most of the time drier (more volume = drier ride in similar models)
if you arent in a huge hurry, i’d suggest waiting til april and coming to the east coast canoe and kayak festivsl at james island county park. you can see the brands side by side then test paddle the ones you like.
Some yak will teack better wiht the extra feet but really I don;t see that much difference. The tridents are great boats but there are several other fishing kayaks out there that are less expensive… the classic debate on yaks is speed vs. stability. Ther are several out there that are a little of both and some that are heavy on oen or the other… I suggest you attend the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival at JICp in April, paddle a buch of different ones and pick one you like.
I ordered the trident 11. I will let you know how it performs. The 11 is 2 feet shorter and 1 inch wider than the 13. Other than no sonar shield on the 11 that would be the only differnce.
My co-worker has an unknown brand of 13’ ocean kayak that she will sell me for 200 bucks. She says it is in really good shape…just tired of kayaking. It seems to me that if it floats and paddles it would be worth $200. Maybe a good way for me to find out about kayaks. She said she would email me a picture in 3 or 4 days. It is in east NC but she will bring it down to the low country when she returns in a few weeks. Anxious to hear about the Trident 11.
