115 Johnson VRO

My VRO has been removed however my oil light has started to come on and the buzzer comes on periodically. Is something shorting out or still plugged in?

thanks,

don

If you did this yourself, would you mind posting if it wasn’t too complicated, I have a 98’ 115hp that I want to change over to pre mix but don’t know how complicated it is to change over, I really haven’t had any problems, but the motor is getting mighty old. Thanks

No, it was done a long time ago, I’ve had the boat 6 years, and it was not doing this. To learn about it I just watched a youtube video on it, guy was doing a 60hp, but it has to be similiar. Pull up youtube and search for “VRO disconnect”. I think some wires were disconnected properly when the VRO was 1st removed and the last service I had the mechanics reconnected those wires. Same old boat stuff you know.

Chris,

Thanks for that info. I haven’t had time to get back to it until today. Is that an expensive proposition?

maybe $200, not sure
replacement is very simple
if you had wires reconnected, that could be your problem

I was thinking the same thing. Had the switch replaced, and a new CDI recently. someone hooked something back up, unfortunely he still is in NC.

Chris V,

Thanks so much for your time. I went out this afternoon got down to the vro, unplugged the 4 wire connector, problem solved. I will always wonder how this got reconnected?

A 98 is mighty old? Not in my book. That’s just a baby needing some TLC to carry it on for many more years.

Manyfish, glad you got it taken care of. I’ve swapped several VRO’s over to pre mix. Just old school like that. The current Suzuki on my carolina skiff is the only engine I haven’t converted over. We’ll see how long it lives. On an oil injection system when you run a plastic gear on a steel one, it’s only a matter of time. It will fail.

All that aside next engine will be a 4 stroke. Man those things are quiet and very fuel efficient.

Fred,

Thanks. This episode just reinforced what I’ve always known. There are no shortcuts. If I had went right to the VRO I would have seen that it was not unplugged, however I thought it had always been unplugged, it would have been a quick fix. instead I’m looked under the dash etc for some shorted wires, when all the time the VRO was hooked up. Could have saved a couple weeks. I’d like to know how it got re-connected.

You are correct on the 4 stroke. I had a little boat, 16’ with a 70 Suziki 4 stroke, it was so quiet I had to look back to see if it was running at idle. Sold it for $3,200. The first guy that looked at it bought. I knew then I had made another mistake.

I would love a 115 Suz or Yam 4 stroke. Quiet and I like the way they are not dumping all that oil in the water also.

LOL, A 98 is 3 years newer than mine!! It ois mostly how you use them and store them. My 95 Key West always draws good looking boat comments, but I take the time to do the PM to the boat and motor… A yearly wax job makes the finish shine!!

I failed to mention I also have 79’Johnson 85 on my old Mckee and a 83’Johnson 25 on the old duracraft, so I guess the 98’ Rude ain’t that old after all,was just a little concerned on the VRO system,I think I will try and find a book like the Childers for cars and change it over just to be on the safe side.
