Wasn’t going to go but wind was still and water looked good. Found birds and fish rolling back in a creek. Threw buck tails and ice flies, little fishes, Alabama rigs and not a hit. It was frustrating because I had it all to myself and they were feeding…just not on anything I had. The shad were the size off large Lima beans. I tried to match the hatch but to no avail. Guess I’ll go back to pulling live bait.
Been there, done that, some days you are better off just backing off and watching and learning!
I fished the mid-lake yesterday looking for more options for Saturday’s MSC tournament. All I caught was 16 carbon-copied 20&1/2 inchers. I’m pretty sure we’re going back to plan A for the tournament. Anyway, having run out of bait early, I decided to jerk some perch in 36 feet of water when the unexpected happen:
A 24.03 pound flathead on 10 pound line with my 5 foot perch jerkin outfit. It was a nice end to lackluster outing, and I hope Spoomaster enjoys the fillets.

James, that’s a nice fish. Congrats! My favorite catfish to eat.

-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad (1/13/37 - 9/27/16 I love you Pops)

Thanks Charles. It was a heckuva fight! My family doesn’t like catfish, but I don’t mind fighting a big one. Spoon came over and got it yesterday morning.

Thanks James, Nice fish! It’s almost as big as the one I caught with you and your Dad a couple of years ago. They sure do put up a good fight! This one will be filleted for my stepmom. She’s a great cook.
Them flatheads will run off lol…a much different fight than you typically think of with a channel cat… Nice catch!

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
That’s right Woody. On the initial run I thought I’d hooked a big striper. However, after a few minutes of solid bottom hugging, I figured it was a big flathead. It never gator-rolled like a big blue; so I ruled that out. After around 10 minutes, I saw bubbles and seconds later it surfaced. Getting it in the net alone was an adventure!
