33" tagged
Capt. theo jourdan was kind enough to take me out after my last final yesterday. got out around 2. wind was less than 10 knots from the NE and the sun was out warming that shinny water up! started out at the DNR where there was already a yak out. He said he had caught a few but he had broken off one on a float. Poor fish is dragging this float around and the yak was trying to paddle over and get the float so that the he could get the hook out. Funny scene overall, hope he got the hook out! We didn’t have any luck at the DNR and Capt Jourdan wanted to move around the harbor and try a few spots. I’d say we found a pod or two of beasts… The tagged fish was 33" and the other is 30". All fish were caught on electric chicken with a 3/0 slathered in pro cure. These guys were just sunbathing in a foot of water. Using 10lb braided with 20lb flourocarbon leader. Had a great time with Theo but had to be at work at 5 so it was a short trip. As far as flats boats are concerned, his is ridiculous btw.

Great job! And by the look of that tag, looks like you’ll have some interesting history to that fish!
Curious. Is that a typo on the braid and leader? Reason I ask I generally fish a 15# braid with a 12# fluoro leader, but recently bought a 1000 Stradic that I put 10# braid on and my 12# fluoro and I get breaks at the uniknot.
Its not a typo. That braided is so (**() strong and all the guides I talk to use 20# flourocarbon. When I fish deeper cloudy spots, I’ve even just tied a hook onto the braid bc it’s less susceptible to the wear and tear that causes mono/flouro to snap. Concerning the knot, when you have small braided compared to the flouro, the knot will slip out. I dont know knot names so i cant tell you what works and what doesn’t BUT any tackle shop will know. Just post something on the discussion of this site and you will get plenty of answers!
vince, about the only thing i use inshore anymore is 15lb powerpro uni-to-uni 20lb fluoro. landed 28 sheeps to 9+lbs on the same hook and leader two days ago, drag barely pulled the whole time. i don’t hesitate going up a class in leader because the good stuff is supposed to be invisible anyway… and haven’t had problems with it breaking at the knot.
Thanks for the info. I’ve never had the issue until the 10# braid, and when it breaks the fluoro prtion of the knot is still there, like it breaks clean at the knot where the leader starts and I lose the leader. The fluro knot remains on the braid, just the leader is gone. Knock on wood it hasn’t happened on a fish. Its usually if I’m trying to shake off of oysters or something where I’m adding extra stress to the line. With my other rods it will pop at the lure knot or close to it.
What you say makes sense. I read last year that in winter’s clearer waters you want to downsize the leader line, and I’ve been a little retentive about it ever since. Maybe too retentive, eh!
Hey Vince…try the tippet knot…google it!!..it’s used in fly fishing but, it works great for tying braid to flouro!!..simple knot…hold tag ends together…make a loop…pass tag ends in through the loop 3 times and pull tight…google “tippet knot” and check out the video!!!
