Fished from 9-1. Started at mouth of Hawley Creek caught 7, 3 keepers (DR at 20-25 ft on 30 fow). Picked delicious burgers at big Mans and headed back to the split. Caught another 5, 3 keepers (DR 15-17 ft on 18-20 fow). Nothing on free lines or boards:angry:. A bunch of boats out fishing. Great morning!

Nice Jorge! I was out perch jerkin’ with my father today. We caught 100+ and caught 3 stripers on the perch spoons to 24 inches. Gonna do stripers Monday, weather permitting. Thanks for the report!

Your a lucky man Fogman. I don’t think I would be able to get out of the house that close to Christmas! Although I plan on hitting it next weekend, weather permitting.

What the hell, James … 100+ … You suck, man :smiley: … One of these days we’re going to have to drag you on our boat and make you show us how you do that … I would like to get the perch thing down for when the younger kids are on the boat … They love catching, but hate fishing :smiley:

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

Not a problem Crusher. We’ll have to get together sometime on the perch. Spoon jerkin on light tackle is great fun, and perch are good table fare deep-fried or grilled skin-side down. When you find a pile of them, it doesn’t take too long to hit the century mark. Many times we’re bringing up 2 at a time with a crappie jig above the spoon, and occasional keeper stripers with largemouth are nice bonus fish.

Thanks guys, but I’d been just as satisfied with the 6 nice stripers you had today Jorge. Perch fishing is something I have done for around 30 years. Other than myself and Spoonmaster, there is a host of anglers that are just as successful if not more so with perch jerkin. They just don’t post on message boards. When you get the hang of it, it’s pretty routine.

From what I’ve heard you might want to try Monticello for the perch. One report a few weeks ago from a friend says 300 or 400 perch in a day. I’ve caught three at a time over there using two white crappie jigs above the spoon. Just let the first fish you hook swim around for a little while, on a tight line, before winding it up.
We didn’t do too well on Murray yesterday. I guess the perch paid off a beaver or some other critter to sabotage the toon boat. Chewed up the plastic gas can top, gas line and power cables from the battery to the motor. Not a pretty sight. Only had trolling motor power after our first stop. Thankfully, our first stop was close to home. Managed to limp around with the trolling motor and catch a few perch and some short stripers. Quit around 12:00 with only 19 perch. Atleast we got enough for the relatives to have a fish fry. I had several places I wanted to go, but stayed close to home. Always better to be safe than sorry. Wanted to be sure to have enough battery power to get back in with power to spare. I think all but three of the perch we caught were on the 1/2 ounce Berry spoons.

I would bet it was a muskrat, and not a beaver. I have had it happen several times.

I got the great idea to go to Wallyworld and get some liquid electrical tape and a fitting to repair the toon boat damage. Couldn’t find the correct size fitting so I bought another primer bulb instead. I guessed it would be OK to have two primer bulbs in the line. First thing I noticed when I got to the boat was more damage to the power cables and others. Started painting on the liquid electric tape and was doing pretty well. Have to wait 5 minutes between coats. After the second coat the rain started. It will probably be Tuesday after the rain before I can start over. I’ll be very glad when the water gets back up enough for me to tie up at the dock again. Never had a problem until tieing up to the bank. Might be asking Santa for a critter trap instead of fishing baits!! Anyone know of a good all purpose critter repellant?

Owl decoys that move their wings when the wind blows might be a deterrent. They might have them at Sportsman’s; however, I know Bass Pro and Cabelas both have them. Just a thought.

Striperskiff’s buddy had the same issue. He has his boat tied up to a dock but couldn’t get them to stop UNTIL he started wrapping all exterior electrical wires with small chain and treble hooks. Says it hasn’t happened since. Cant really do that for the fuel line but will help with the electrical stuff. Maybe tim can post a pic if he can get one.

There is a company in Charlotte that sells stainless steel spring to use around cable’s to prevent Rat damage. It is available at some local boat stores. But, I have found that if you wrap aluminum foil around the cables, the Rat’s will pretty much leave them alone. I use an aluminum foil tape, that has adhesive on one side. It can be found a Lowe’s or Home Depot, and is intended as seam tape for aluminum backed insulation.

I have black plastic pipe for the water line for one of my three irrigation systems. That was a mistake, because the Rat’s have ate about 8 feet of the suction line. I knew there was a problem, since I wasn’t getting water, but until the water dropped, I did not know for sure why.

If you leave your boat in the water, year-round,like I do, you need to do something. I have also used traps, with some success, but had better luck just shooting them in the head with .22 caliber short hollow points! You just need to know what is in the line of sight, and understand that bullets will skip off of water, e.g. don’t have a house of boat in your line of sight.

I have had the same problem with extended dockage and muskrats…solution I found that works is wrap all wires and gas lines with aluminum tape that is used to hold insulation around duct work. peel off the paper backing and cover the wires. Since it is aluminum you can crunch it down on the wires… Never have had a problem since I did that…
