12/26 - Skunked and dead duck q

Fished the first day of the fly tourney with my new rig that my wife got for me at the haddrells ladies night.
Fished from just before sunrise to about 4, didn’t see a fish or get a touch. Worked pretty hard, lots of spots. Felt good about getting better at casting and hitting my targets, in the end my batteries ran out on my TM. It was having to run at max in most spots due to the wind/currrent. Was tough to get in position to be able to cast to fishy spots due to the wind.
As I was coming back behind SI I noticed a bunch of dead ducks floating by. It looked like they had been shot, what’s the deal with that?
Oh, the icing on the cake was my trailer had a flat!
Anyway, hope y’all did better.

Cheers

Its what we call the poachers cut or feild dressing. You take the top cut and leave the carcas. You see it on santee with catfish all the time. They cut the back meat off and toss the fish back. Hunters cut the breast off and toss the duck back. Also some of the ducks/waterfowl around here are killed for sport. Ive talked to several duck hunters at the landings. The ones that actually keep the ducks said they’re hard to make taste good and theres not much meat on them.

I went yesterday and got skunked and lost my wallet, probably about 100 dollar total loss. High dirty water, no trout to be found
The flat trailer tire is a classic, at least it was a nice day. Ive been that guy before.

It’s not field dressing or a “poacher’s cut.”

They probably just breasted the birds and disposed of carcasses. They’re like a dove, the only real meat is on the breast, the rest isn’t worth messing with.

People who say it’s hard to make taste good are idiots…unless you’re referring to marsh hens.

Recipe for marsh hens:
Place 6-8 breasts on a treated 2x6. Place on grill. When marsh hen meat is done, remove. Throw marsh hens in trash and eat the 2x6.

Stump, you are right, at least I was fishing.
Need to get all three tires replaced on trailer today and the jack gave up on me as well.
Looks like a nice few days coming up but we are heading to New Orleans tomorrow for NYE.
Hope y’all. An get out and catch a few

Cheers

It’s possible to cook it and make it good for sure, just takes a special person.

A friend’s dad made some perlo with some for us one time. We took it to a dove shoot and put it on the big grill in a pan. After the hunt it was gone…and everyone loved it without even knowing what it was. That was the only time I actually ENJOYED eating it.

Fished with the Youngen and Brother-in-law on xmas day and found clearer water in 8, than in 16’. Found about 10 trout stacked in a 7’ hole / eddy including one red in there as well. We were all bouncing the bottom in this spot and didn’t get the first hit, I made a cast off target and began to reel it off the bottom and whammo, fish on!!! Told the gang to do a steady retrieve and wouldn’t you know it every cast produced a fish or had a hit. Water 55 degrees.

A good seasoned perlo with most any meat in it cut in small pieces would be good. I guess it’s more of the idea.
