Managed to find 13 reds scattered along weedline banks on various scented soft plastics. Nothing doing for me in the bay.
Water was 66° and MUDDY.
Anyone have any luck with trout in the area?
Nice to see a report.
Did you find clean water anywhere?

I decided to put in and fish around the Sampit for the first time Wednesday to try and find some cleaner water… I found clear water- but I didn’t get anything that even resembled a bite all day.
I also didn’t realize the water in the Sampit would have such a low salinity.
Beautiful place, but from my 5 hours of experience -absolutely fishless (although I know this isn’t true- I did see fish all over the depthfinder).
Windy conditions…
Water was 69º

The Sampit river is relatively small short river. With all of the rain recently it has pushed all of the brackish water out .
…I was thinking the smaller drainage basin would allow the river to return to normal quicker than than the larger rivers…
But then again, I’m relatively new to fishing the salt.
Does the Sampit ever hold trout under normal conditions or is it too far upstream from the ocean?
I’ve never fished the Sampit for trout, but see no reason why it wouldn’t hold them in winter conditions. They move upstream during the cold months but it’s been an usually weird warm winter so far. The Sampit definitely holds a good population of reds which I learned about while bass fishing many years ago with plastic worms. Destroyed some tackle that day and all were over slot.

It has been a few years now but one winter we put the beat down on the trout in Sampit. But normally you do not find them up there.
Anyone ever get any stripers in any of the area rivers?
I haven’t but have seen a few caught in the Little River area. Would guess they’re in Winyah by now.
