Left DI marina at 6:30 AM aboard the “Baby O” with the very able captain Mike O and mates Jeff and Grant. Went to the Chas 60 and Jeff and Grant made quick work putting 4 dozen cigars in the well. Headed south along the 500 line and put lines in about 29 miles past the rocks in 105’. SHARKS!!! After many epic battles with the aforementioned species, we decided to move toward black banks and put some CBASS into the boat. Worked 95’ and same thing, SHARKS! Only caught 2 small 10" CBASS all day. We were fishing live cigars, cut squid, cut finger mullet and jigs to no avail. Hoping to avoid a major skunk, captain Mike wisely decides to take us to Commanche. We get there and there are 4 other boats securely anchored in the #'s we were hoping to fish. Instead of invading their space, capt. Mike opts for moving around looking for additional structures. We found a couple and fished them hard. Ended up with B-Liners and Trig. Avoided the skunk in the last 60 minutes of fishing.
The ride in was fantastic. Epic conditions, although Mikes new Grady 232 Gulfstream with a Yami 350 would have been plenty capable of much worse. Back at DI marina, we saw one of the boats we fished near today. They obviously had a little better day. They were cleaning an ARS that weighed in over 25lbs[:0][:0][:0]
Mike, thanks again for a fun day. You are an able captain and the crew was a lot of fun to fish with. We’ll get em next time.
