13 Stinger Project

Well I figured since everyone else likes to post the project that they are working on, why not post mine.

I came across this little Stinger at a cost of nothing to me. So I figured I could not pass that deal up. Only real reason I took it on is to have something for me and my daughter to do together once it is complete.

It had a couple of holes in the bottom, a rotten front deck and rotten transom. Lots of dirt and grime but nothing that could not be cleaned up.

I cut out both of the forward bow deck sections and rebuilt them incorporating an anchor locker and some bow storage. I more than doubled the size of the forward deck to make space for the anchor locker and off set and beefed up that deck to hold a trolling motor. The rear bench seat had a small storage box built in that I am going to turn into a live well. I cut out the rest of it and it will become storage.

I was going to make it a tiller boat again but I picked up a new, small, console pretty cheap so now she is going to be a little center console boat. Also, that will mean my little girl can learn about running the boat a little easier too. And I have got a little 30hp Yamaha to throw on the back of it so it should run pretty well with that.

Well thats about it for now. Here are some pictures of it so if anyone has any thoughts or ideas for it, feel free to let me know.

And if you had not noticed, the pictures are a little mixed up as far as the order of them. But it gives you an idea of where it is at. When it cools off a little, it will be time to get back to work on it.

Awesome! Keep the pics coming. I love this stuff  Your workmanship looks good!

Wood Driftboat

Worked on the little Stinger some yesterday. Got my new transome lumber cut out. Took a couple of pictures and drank way to much beer. Brought it back up to a true 20" transome. It had been cut down to like a 17" transome and it was rotten from never being sealed up. It will be solid by the time I am done with it. At least I hope so anyway.

Glued the transom in place and glassed it up. It still needs a little finish work but it is solid.

Does the old transom wood not extend all the way to the gunnels on each side? I was just wondering why the transom section stopped short of the port and starboard gunnels sides and therefore have more to tab in to for more strength.

I was going to cut all the way to sides like you are talking about but I used a skill saw to cut it out and the frame on the saw would not let me get any closer. The would in the middle was shot but everything on the sides of that was solid. I cut way past the rot and it has way more glass in it now than what was there. But yes, I do agree, it would be better to have taken it all the way out to sides of the hull.

Try one of the “ultrasonic” multi-function tools that everyone sells nowadays. With the right attachment you can cut right up to the corner.
I think Harbor Freight sells them for around $30.
They are the cat’s meow when doing a project like yours.
