I was given a 14 mckee craft hull with console and seats and a trailer. It is a mid 80s model and structurally in great shape but just needs some cosmetic tlc.
Is it worth spending $8,000 - $9,000 to repower the boat and get it looking nice again?
I will primarily be using it off of a jet dock for quick afternoon fishing trips and hauling the kids around.
Also, if anyone has a great used 60hp outboard for sale that might help me cut down some of the costs.
great little boat. I don’t know if I’d spend that kind of money on a new motor for it though. I had a 14 with a 60 Mercury 2 stroke on it and it ran great, a good friend had one with a 70 Johnson 2 stroke on it and it was all the power you could want. I wouldn’t put anything below 50 hp on it.
The boat looks exactly like the picture below. It was left outside for years and the hull has mildew and debris stains all over it. However, there are no chips in the gel coat anywhere and it looks structurally brand new. I have the two pedestal seats which are 90% and a fiberglass bench seat for in front of the console.
Just as a point of reference,I just picked up a 01 McKee 16 for 5K.It has the original Honda 90 that after 1K or sorting everything out I’ve got a great boat running strong and I’m in it for 6K.It’s just very discouraging that you can pick up a very nice older boat for almost nothing, but the engine kills the deal.My mechanic said my motor alone was worth about 4K, so that means I got a solid McKee 16 hull for 1K.Its getting to be more about the motor than the boat!
