14 skiff repair

a dixie malibu 14ft 1980, 25 hp 2 stroke I want to add a forward casting deck, and a few bulkheads, do I need marine grade or just fibberglass exterior plywood. or similar repairs?
this is not a mercedes level boat

where to buy plywood

Exterior plywood is fine ,then call Clark Craft and order some of their epoxy resin ,it’s good stuff. Then study up on the way they recommend installing bulkheads and decks on stitch and glue boatbuilding.Order some cabosil or wood flour to build your filets so the fiberglass cloth will lay right also.Tons of info on the internet,I built a couple of boats using this method, very easy compared to the old ways.

Make sure plywood is dried somehow before laminating. If there is any moisture in the wood, you will run the risk of possibly delaminating

Treated plywood and aluminum don’t mix
The chemicals will cause holes in the aluminum

They have great build threads for just what you are looking for

Who said it was an aluminum boat? I don’t think a Dixie Malibu skiff is aluminum.

We extended the forward deck on our 16ft American Skiff about a foot to give us some extra storage and a little more room for casting. We used what ever materials we had available like pressure treated 2x4s, composite decking boards and pressure treated plywood. We bought some SS hinges and were given a carpet remnant from a carpet house. It’s lasted quite a few years and was recently painted with a marine paint from Lowe’s.

EPOXY IS OBVIOUSLY STRONGER THAN POLYESTER RESIN, BUT ITS ALSO 3 TIMES AS EXPENSIVE.
FOR ADDING A DECK AND OR STORAGE WITH BULKHEADS, STANDARD PLYWOOD WITH POLYESTER RESIN WILL WORK FINE. AFTERALL, THE ENTIRE BOAT WAS BUILT 37 YEARS AGO USING POLYESTER RESIN.
IF YOU WANT IT TO LAST INDEFINATELY, FULLY ENCAPSULATE EVERY PIECE OF WOOD WITH GLASS AND RESIN BEFORE YOU ATTACH IT TO ANOTHER PIECE. ESPECIALLY THE EDGES.
THIS MEANS YOU WILL NEED TO ROUND OVER THE EDGES SO YOU CAN WRAP IT WITH GLASS.
NONE OF THIS IS REQUIRED.
THEY WERE BUILDING BOATS OUT OF WOOD FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS BEFORE EPOXY AND FIBERGLASS.
IT WILL JUST MAKE IT LAST LONGER WITH LESS MAINTENANCE
