150 Johnson shutting off after restart

I have a 150 Johnson that cranks right up and runs great, until you shut it down… If you run it for about an hour, shut it down, let the engine sit for ~ 20 min, and restart it, it shuts back off like it is starved for fuel after approx 5 seconds. I don’t think it is losing prime (the bulb is still firm). The only way to keep it running is to drop it in neutral and gun the engine for ~ 15 seconds, then it runs fine…I thought it might be water in the tank, but I have changed the water seperator and it still happens…Any ideas what to check? Thanks

Im not an expert on this motor, but it sounds like a weak ignition winding. Those will give you a fit when hot, but will start right up cold, but be tricky to start hot.

Just an idea, since I dont know much about that specific one. I would try an inline spark tester, you can borrow one from advance/autozone for next to nothing as long as you bring it back in the same shape.

my 150 johnson just started to do the same thing if you get any info please let me know.

if its a 60degree new style motor, there is a small VST even though its a carbed engine, and that can cause some issues with hot starts

Welcome to the club. I am a 2000 Johnson 150 owner. My motor does the same exact thing. I believe anyone with the last few Johnson’s made is forced to suffer through this. I have done all the usual basic fixes people will recommend you to do. As you can tell from searching on google, the solution has yet to be posted.
