ETEC… Just because they seem to be not nearly as noisey… but the Opti i was on was older (08ish)
etec, love my 200HP. Quiet!
If you wanna go fast, get a Merc. If you wanna get home get a Yamaha.
no Etec experience but own a Merc Pro XS 175 OPTI which has been flawless as was the previous opti.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have owned Yamaha and Opti-Max. I would choose Opti over Etec. Alot of the Yamaha guys that have never run Mercury bash them out of ignorance. One thing to consider is your oil cost. Either motor you choose whether it be Etec or Opt-max, you better go with the manufacturers required synthetic oil blend or you going to have problems.

we see far fewer fatal issues with the new optis than with the new etec.
im talking about 150hp and up
from what i have seen, the 90 and smaller etecs seem to be great motors.
the majority of the issues I have seen with the etec are from the ones running 100:1 oil
My previous boat had a 225 Opti (I bought it on Chris V’s recommendation) and I loved that engine. It sipped oil and fuel and the performance was mind blowing. The F250 I have now sure is quiet but I wouldn’t say that it’s a better motor. Had that boat suited my needs I would have kept it forever. Also Mercury has one of the best warranties in the industry. I’ve heard negative things about the ETEC warranty but maybe that’s been fixed.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. Purchased a new Optimax today.

Congrats on the Opti, we have a new optimax and love it. I don’t know about Chris-V with the E-tecs blowing up, we run our E-tecs hard all the time and they are the 100 to 1 oil mixture(5 250 e-tecs between 2 boats and just sold one of them). They have well over 2,000hrs with no problems. The military in Beaufort has also switched to the E-tec as well and our rescue squad works with them often
