I have a 1979 15hp evinrude. it runs great when you crank it up in the yard with the ear muffs and water runnin through it but when you get it in the water and under a load it doesnt wanna do much over idle. any thoughts?
Always check condition of gas now with ethanol gas but my guess is
that the jets in the carb are gummed up. I’ve had one for 30 years
and thats a common problem.
Well the problem is i bought it about 2 months ago from a friend and it hadnt been run in like 5 years. i went to their house one day and had little hopes of it crankin. then on the 12th pull it cranked and ran. so i put it in the water and it ran fine. i took it to edisto marine for them to replace the prop seal and when i got it back it ran great until the trottle stuck open. fixed that and now its doin what i posted earlier. ive had the carbs cleaned and fuel is definitely gettin to the carb. not sure what else to check
I own a 15hp Evinrude. You know the old southern saying (using a heavy accent), “is it got fire”, “is it got fuel”? It’s never the fire, it’s always the fuel.
Usually I do this before the sputtering ever starts. There is a screw on the carb down on the side or bottom of the fuel reservoir. Unscrew it and pump the ball about ten times. Do it in the driveway so, you don’t kill the grass. Put the screw back in and fire it back up. I do this to my motor all the time. The small motors are very susceptible to bogging down with just a little moisture/water in the bottom of the carb. One good hot day can throw moisture in the gas tank and right into the carb bowl.
Works for ME anyway. Mine started bogging the other day. I feared the worst. Ten pumps of the fuel ball with the screw out and it was back to running like new. Hope it works for you.
Is that screw easy to get too? I know that carb is hell to take out and put back in. Which side is it on? The side with the fuel line? Or the side with the pull cord? Thanks I’ll try it when I get off wor
quote:My 15hp is a bit newer than yours BUT I have seen the screw on many motors, Yamaha 115, Johnson 60, etc... On my Evinrude it is on the side and fairly easy to get to. I only pop the lid and I use a boxed end wrench to unscrew it. It, pretty much, is put there to do just what I describe. Flush that fuel bowl out. In what part of town are you? You can PM me with that info, if you want to.

Hold the buggy fella’s. Ya’ll over lookin sumpin, he said it ran fine until the throttle stuck open and he fixed it. 94 was the throttle problem in the tiller handle or at the carb? did you fix it or have someone els do it? I’m goin out on a limb and say whilst puttin it back together that somethin got outta adjustment. There was too mane fines up to the point of throttle stuck and fixed it. I would back trac the throttle repair first. Just my .02 worth since I’m not an offical mochanic.

I’ve got a 15 Jon and a Rude. If it has sat for 5 yrs I promise you the carb needs rebuilding. If you don’t get good fuel flow then you also don’t get proper oil to the engine. You don’t want to do that. Take the pull start assby off carefully. Take a cell phone shots of it first. One bolt on the top. Lift it up all together and don’t let the bottom part where the big spring is come out! Wrap it with duck tape 'til you you put it back. Pay attention to the little spring on the red plastic toggle. Goes on the outside. (reason for pic) You can get to the 2 carb bolts easy then. May have to take throttle toggle and linkage loose. Rebuild the carb. All that involves is a good cleaning and make sure the 3 gas port holes and bottom of jets are not blocked. A fine piece of wire works good or a torch tip cleaner pack wires. Screw hi & low jet adj screws in until just snug and count exact turns 'til it snugs.(NOT TIGHT) To replace just bottom each out and back out number of turns to where it was. Put it back together. There is a detailed explanation with pics on iboats.com for about anything you want to do. Also while the pull start and carb is off it would be a good time to put an impeller in water pump. Linkage hook up is under the carb. Cotter pin is a biyotch!
