Was waiting and waiting for this weekend to get here with the full moon and some nice flood tides…only to be disappointed by the bad weather that came with it. Went out Friday evening and only saw a glimpse of a tail…never to surface again.
Then attempted to go out Saturday knowing it would be bad with the bad winds!..just got mad…end of that story.
Woke up Sunday ready to fish!!..but woke up and it was only 50 degrees!! Still went to a flat though…it was cold, saw no fiddlers and hardly any bait…saw zero fish! Again, mad…because the tides were right! The day turned out nice, warmed up quite a bit…and was eager to give the late evening flood a chance…hoping to see something before it got too dark. Went to well known flat that produces a lot of fish. Walked to the spot…during the walk out, saw very few fid crabs (better than none!).
Once there, I saw a lot of commotion in the tall grass, so I went to investigate. Walked up and didn’t see anything…gave a quick glance back to make sure nothing was happening behind me…and sure enough!..Big fat tail going at it! Not only tailing, but straight rootin (yall know what I’m talking about!).
This was it…gotta make it happen. Made one cast about 2 feet off to the side, made 1 strip and Wham!..FISH ON! YAY!! Put up a good fight…strong fella full of energy.
My first tail for 2011…25" caught on a fly my buddy Martin gave me (gold spoon w/ chartreuse tail)…thanks for the assist man! 
We saw one more on our walk back…but he was cruising through the area fast, and didn’t make it to him in time. By this time, it was dark and wrapped it up.
