Looks great…let me know when you take it out for a test ride. Would like to stop by and check it out if I’m free and you putting in at the dam

Will do. It will be March before I run it out though. The cushions are being made in Florida and we are picking them up after our Disney trip on March 8th. That should be the final item for a splash.

I have an '89 hull that I need to overhaul and just have not the time or money. It is a Newport model, which is a bit different inside and the rails are different, but the hull is same as a Montauk. Love the boat, just needs new power and an overhaul. I am ‘driving the wheels off’ in the meantime.

Getting ready to pull my Montauk 17 out of the water next week for my annual refresh. Last year I did the wood and a marine-tex patch on the keel. This year the plan is to do a deeeeeep clean and detail, add a trolling motor and get it back in the water as fast as possible. LOVE, love, LOVE my whaler. My friends give me a hard time telling me I should get a nicer/bigger boat, but for my creek and the way we use the boat, it couldn’t be more perfect.

Those trim tabs are going to work great where you have them mounted. My trim tab setup is a 70 lb yellow lab. Wherever she runs the boat trims.

Well, after doing a lot of tidying up for 2-3 weeks that really didn’t have anything new and picture worthy, I finally got back from Florida with new OEM cushions. G0t the new Z legs mounted and mounted up the new cushion. Restored the teak flip backrest, and got the gas tank mounted with drideck underneath for drainage.

Also got my warranty replacement cooler from K2 and a new cushion and hydraturf pad. It looks like they have made some improvements. In addition to solving the foam issue in the lid that caused distortion, the reason I replaced it, they seem to have gone to a smother plastic mold rather than the grainy texture they used before. They also changed the latches to a softer rubber instead of that really hard plastic latch.

Thanks Larry!

Today, it was the first non freezing, non wet day off in a while. So she came out of the garage, fixed a few punch list items, attached the bow cushion and off the to the lake she went for her maiden voyage.

Really pleased with how she turned out. Runs great, very stable, great layout, and tons of room just where we need it. She ran 43.5 with my carryover 19" prop, however I couldn’t get max rpm. Might need to step down a tad, but she ran great with this one. Turns like its on rails, and the trim tabs helped keep the bow down into the waves as expected. No more launching over wakes like I remember when a kid.

Where did you source the bimini? That’s exactly what I’m looking for a McKee 16.With the cult-like following of the Montauk 17, your potential ROI will be great should you ever wish to monetize your hard work!

I have one for my skiff from here and been very happy with it. I don’t think they sell direct, but you should be able to go through a local dealer or an online retailer.

Their selection guide shows bimini tops for McKee.

I got the top from boattopsdirect. It’s a Carver made here in West Columbia I believe. Really good quality and a great price. I just couldn’t see paying $1200 for an OEM Mills top when I could get this one for $500.

Thank you for the great idea on the drideck for drainage under the gas tank.

What hardware did you use to mount your trolling motor bracket?

Cheers

I used the proper size ss screws and then a bed of marine silicone for water intrusion and to make it a little more solid.

First, let me apologize for not speaking to you. I saw you putting at the dam Thursday afternoon as I was pulling out. I was the only boat there loading as you backed in. I thought that I knew you and the boat, but it took me a minute to figure it out. Boat looks really good, better in real life than the pictures. Once again, I’m sorry for not speaking and I’ll be sure to speak next time.

No worries Bowhunter. I saw you and thought the Ranger looked familiar. I should have spoken as well.

Thanks for the compliments. It’s currently at Happy Bob’s getting a back seat installed for the family. My little girl is an adventurer, and I know she will love to climb all over the splash well and motor cables, so I needed a way to “block” the motor area. Should have it back after this weekend and will post pics.

Thanks,

Why the jack plate and trim tabs? Just curious
Never saw them on a Montauk before. I bet they change the ride significantly …

Lots of montauks have jack plates. Just not many adjustable. This hull rides much better with the motor setback and about 4" high. Plus I use the adjustable for getting in and out of shallow water.

Trim tabs level the boat as these hulls lean badly when weight isn’t centered. Must be because of the round bottom shape. Also, the tabs help keep the bow down in waves. These boats like to launch an ff of wakes and chop and creates a lot to of pounding. The tabs stop this.
