18 foot Scout

I’ve got a buddy with an 18-foot Scout and he’s wondering what kind of draft some of you Scout owners are seeing in shallow water. He’s trying to decide on a poling platform or selling and buying something that he knows will get skinny.

Anybody out there happy or disappointed with their Scout in shallow water?

I have a Scout Dorado 175 with a 115 Yamaha 2 stroke I have been in water less than knee deep with the motor trimmed up. Never actually did the measurement, just knew because i was in the water pushing the boat.

he will be wasting his money. not only will his boat not get skinny, but it will probably be somewhat unpoleable due to high sides and poor tracking

I have a 175 Scout with a Yam 115, about two feet is it. If he installs a poling platform he will loose depth due to the extra weight displaced when he’s on the platform. Scouts are low in the rear end, his weight plus the platform will lower the rear enough to take on water though the scuffers and he will loose his advantage.

I had a 185 sportfish. I wouldn’t dream about putting a poling platform on it. Man I miss that boat.

You have to look at what you want to use the boat for. If all you want to do is fish the flats then get a flats boat. Your boat is very versatile. You can fish for trout; take it to the jetties, 4ki, Chas 60, or wakeboard behind it. It’s hard to do all that in a flats boat.

My buddy has a correction, it is a 2002 19 sport fish. He wants to go skinny and has a feeling his boat won’t do what he wants it to do. Any further input is appreciated.

In fact, he might look hard at a trade if somebody has a super-skinny flats boat and wants something bigger. Maybe I’ll have him list it here in the classifieds.

Catch em up.
