What do yall think about going offshore in an 18 dauntless whaler with a 130 honda and 60 gallons of gas? I personally dont thinks its a great idea but my dad thinks itd be fine if you pick a good day
depends upon your definition of offshore.I’ve been 2 or 3 miles out in my 17 Newport, and could further on a good day.I choose, however to use my boat at the jetties and inshore, and go offshore with someone who has a bigger boat.
jus pick your days right! i went out to 450’ saturday and have been out to 1200’ on my 18’ grady-white. it doesnt take too much to start getting slammed in the boat. i take some extra gas and usually dont run into too many problems. i carry spare gps and vhf. i also have a spot onboard. i have been thru a thunderstorm 40mi out and its not fun in a small boat! also had bad gas in a jerry can before and that turned out relatively not great either. all learning experiences which made me respect the ocean all the time. if u ever need a buddy boat u can be my wingman!

Drive it to Bermuda or the Azores and be as proud as you want about what brand boat you have, but when the gremlins or mother nature turn sour on you, do you really want to risk your lives/property to catch some fish that would be happy to eat you?
The Coast Guard can’t always save the unfortunate or the unwise.
Thanks for the input. On a day like saturday it seems like it wouldnt be bad at all. But that dosent happen often. I just want to go for enought to maybe catch some dolphin late season when they move in some. Im not sure of all the reefs anf places offshore besides 380, 226, the banks, and gth.
Bo, buy a map. Its a good place to start. Try to buddy boat or ride with someone that has a boat a little bigger then yours who will fish the same areas you want to fish.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
We see 20’ boats on the ledge all the time.
I’ve even seen a 13’Whaler at the 4KI.
I wouldn’t want to be in a 18’ boat past 100’ simply because of the time it takes to get back in if the wind picks up. The “pick your days” is what all of us do but since you can’t predict T-storms it is always a crap-shoot.
Put safety first, when the “O-sh!+” rolls out of somebody’s mouth it is too late.
As Charles Barkley would say, its a “Turrible” idea…ha…
Dolphin and schoolie wahoo will be in 75-100ft in a week or so,if not now.I would suggest trying them there(20-30nm from jettys) rather than the other spots you mentioned.
