1976 OMC stator question

This is regarding the stator (battery charging coils) on a 1976 35hp OMC w/electric start. The engine runs fine without the stator, but it would be nice to run lights and keep a charge on the battery.

The stator consists of two sets of coils mounted as one unit on a single bracket. One of the yellow wires leading to the rectifier has detached from the one of stator windings. This stator unit has been discontinued and is very difficult to find.

Two questions:

  1. If I disconnect the yellow wires from the bad coil will the remaining good coil still work, albeit it at half of the capacity of two?

  2. The windings on the bad coil are intact but loose, which presumably is what caused the yellow wire to detach. Can I re-solder the yellow wire to the stator windings and cover the windings with some type of epoxy?

does teh motor have points, or a power pack?
if its a powerpack, be careful, the stator also produces the power to run the powerpack
