1982 75Hp Evinrude Model TRLCN starting issue

Good afternoon,
I just bought a McKee craft w/ a 1982 Evinrude for my two boys this Christmas. I am mechanically inclined, but don’t have the detailed experience of a seasoned mechanic…so bottom line, I need some help figuring this out.

The motor will not start while cold without me spraying starter fluid while my son turns the key. Once it is started, it will run “ok”. Over the past two days, it has developed a miss. The motor loves to run “full throttle” and will idle ok. If I let the motor sit for 20 minutes, it will not start again unless I use starter fluid. If I let it sit for 20 seconds, it will fire right up. This motor litterly drinks gas (it must think it costs 20 cents/gallon). Is it a timing issue? Does this sound like the typical carb problem for this motor?

Things I have done:

  1. Removed the carbs, cleaned the jets w/ carb cleaner and high pressure air (110 psig)

  2. Replaced all fuel hoses, verified fuel pump was working by starting w/out hoses attached to carbs.

  3. Replaced spark plugs and properly gapped them (it fired right up after I did this, but once I ran the motor for a while, I had the same starting issue). When I pull the plugs out, they are not dry and seem almost wet.

Thanks for any help given.

still sounds like a carb issue

sounds like my mysterious starting issues over the summer - did you check for operator error? (j/k - you know who this is…)

I think remember reading at the time that weak/pinholed fuel pump diaphragms could cause it to run fine WOT when enough pumping pressure is built up but not a low/starting speeds?

I know you thought I was crazy, but the whole “vapor lock” thing still makes sense to me - heat soak after running eventually vaporizes all the fuel in the lines, then motor can’t pull enough suction to re-prime the line.

i’m interested to see what yuo come up with.

Hahahahah, I need you to come over and help me out w/ this thing. It will idle and my carbs are full of gas, so I don’t think it is the vapor lock issue (at least this time). The starting issue is killing me.
